Wimbledon Womens Shocker
Wimbledon this year is proving to be the most exciting one for many years. Not only do we still have a Brit in the Men’s tournament, but all the top seeds in the Womens matches have been knocked out in the early games.
First to go was Maria Sharapova (number 3 seed) in the second round, beaten by Kudryavtseva in two straight sets. Number one seed Ana Ivanovic only made into the third round before being beaten by Zheng (1-6 4-6). Whilst number two seed, Jelena Jankovic was beaten by Tamarine Tanasugarn on Monday afternoon in the fourth round match which ended 6-3 6-2.
The pain of the top seeds doesn’t end there, Svetlana Kuznetsova (fourth seed) was also eliminated from the Women’s Singles Tournament in her fourth round game against Agnieszka Radwanska from Poland. Radwanska managed a 6-4 1-6 7-5 win over Kuznetsova despite looking on dodgy ground earlier in the game.
This is the first time since 1927 that there have not been one of the top four seeded players through to the Quarter finals. In fact this has not occured in any Grand Slam Tournament since 1968.
What does this mean for the Women’s Singles Tournament?
It means that there will be a new winner for this competition this year, although Ivanovic will remain number one seed.
Looking at the players that are left in the women’s competition, the Williams sisters are looking favourite to win the tournament. Venus is a little ahead of her sister, with odds of 6/4 available from skybet, or Bet365 is offering odds of 2/1 on Serena winning the tournament.
Serena 6th Seed faces Radwanska for her quarter final match and Venus is in the middle of her match against Tanasugarn. Will we see a Williams Sisters Final? We’ll have to wait and see…
