French Open: Tuesday’s Play

Yesterday’s play yielded no surprises with both of the men’s matches being won in straight sets and the top seeded players in the women’s matches won out too. Definitely a day to back the favourites, so how did the days action develop? Ladies first:

Schnyder who sits at number 10 seed took on Ivanovic the number 2 seed. Ivanovic dominated the game with some fantastic play to return a 6-3 6-2 win over Schnyder in just one hour and fifteen minutes. Ivanovic will now face Jankovic (number 3 seed) in the semifinals.

Jankovic secured her place in the semifinals by beating Navarro 6-3 6-2. Again a decisive win and with Jankovic facing fellow Serbian Ivanovic in the semi final, what a game it promises to be.

In the men’s matches, we have already learned that Nadal and Djokovic won their games, what we now know is that they are to face each other in the semi finals. Of the two players, Djokovic was challenged the most. His game against Latvian teenager Gulbis ended 7-5 7-6 (7-3) 7-5.

Whilst Nadal saw little competition from Nicolas Almagro who only manage to win three games. Nadal stormed the win 6-1 6-1 6-1, which takes his unbeaten run now to 26 matches.

Today at the French Open

It’s not just the semi finals which have the promise of some great tennis, we also have the last of the quarter finals taking place today.

At Court Suzanne Lenglen we have Kuznetsova facing Kanepi. Kuznetsova the number 4 seed beat Azarenka in the fourth round to get her place in the quarter finals, whilst Kanepi beat Kvitova. Kuznetsova is favourite to win this match at odds of 1/8 available from Ladbrokes amongst others. The best odds on Kanepi winning are with Sporting Bet at 13/2.

The other Womens match proves to be a bit more difficult to decide on. We have Safina who saw off Sharapova in the fourth round taking on Dementieva who is number 7 seed. The odds on either player are fairly close with 8/13 on Safina winning (from Stan James) or 6/4 for Dementieva winning (from Bet365).

For the men’s matches we have number one seed Federer taking on Chilean Gonzalez. Although Gonzalez is 24 seed, he is yet to be beaten on a clay surface. He has played and won 16 matches on this surface, will he be able to continue this run? Gonzalez has been named as the most dangerous player in this tournament, if he concentrates on his game, he could well beat Federer. The last time these two men met, Gonzalez did beat him (in Shanghai last year).

The bookies do not share this idea though, they have Federer as firm favourite 1/9 available at William Hill. If however you share in the uncertainty, you may well place a bet on Gonzalez, where you can get odds of 13/2 at Bet365. Interesting is that 75% of punters are backing Gonzalez to win against 25% for Federer, so I guess there’s more than a few people looking o him for a win.

The other men’s match this afternoon is between Monfils and Ferrer. This one is expected to be less unsure. The bookies are backing Ferrer as favourite with Stan James offering odds of 1/4 against 18/5 available from Sporting Bet on Monfils to win.
