Tennis – French Open: Mondays results and Todays Preview
French Open: Mondays Play
Yesterday saw a mixture of play and breaks for the weather, however we did see the conclusion of two very good matches. The World number one seed Federrer took on the unseeded Frenchman Benneteau. Benneteau did play some great tennis, but unfortunately fell foul of some of the not so great tennis, allowing Federrer to beat him in straight sets 6-4 7-5 7-5.
Other men’s games included Fernando Gonzalez from Chile who saw off Robby Ginepri 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 6-1. Incidentally Gonzalez is to play Federrer in the quarter finals. The French crowd were absolutely delighted with Gael Monfils as he despatched Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic from the tournament 7-6 4-6 6-3 6-2.
It was a sad day in the Womens games for top seed Maria Sharapova who was beaten by fellow Russian Dinara Safina 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (7-5) 6-2. It was a tough match, but Sharapova was unable to regain her form and was knocked out of the competition. Safina will play Elena Dementieva in the quarter finals.
Dementieva’s match was against Zvonareva, which she nailed in just 1 hour and 48 minutes. Zvonareva was all over the place, making error after error, before Dementieva won through 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
The other 2 fourth round womens games will conclude today.
