RUGBY LEAGUE CARNEGIE CHALLENGE CUP QUARTER-FINALS

LEEDS v WIGAN

Leeds Rhinos were handed a major boost ahead of the Carnegie Challenge Cup Quarter Final against Wigan Warriors at Headingley, with the announcement that New Zealand international Brent Webb has agreed a new three year deal with the club. Webb, who recently earned his 17th cap for the Kiwis, was due to be out of contract at the end of the current season but has now signed a three year extension that will keep him at Headingley until at least the end of the 2011 season.

HULL KR v ST. HELENS

Holders St Helens have been paired with Hull KR in the Quarter Finals of the Carnegie Challenge Cup. Saints, who suffered a 24-22 loss to Rovers n February, will return to Craven Park in the last eight. The tie pits Saints boss Daniel Anderson, who is in his final season before returning to Australia, against his brother-in-law Justin Morgan, the Hull KR coach. An away tie ends a run of 10 successive home draws going back more than three years for St Helens, who are aiming to lift the prestigious knockout trophy for a third successive year.

BRADFORD v HULL FC

Allan Agar, as scrum-half, helped Hull KR lift the Challenge Cup for the only time in 1980. He subsequently coached Featherstone to victory three years later. One both occasions the losing finalists were Hull FC, now coached by Agar’s son Richard. Agar junior is hoping to take a further
step along the road to Wembley when his Black and Whites meet Bradford Bulls at Odsal in Sunday’s quarter-final. Although competing for a modern version of the Cup, Agar has fond memories of the original version, now residing at the headquarters of the Rugby League.

WAKEFIELD v OLDHAM

John Kear and Steve Deakin masterminded one of the greatest upsets in sporting history, when the veteran coaches guided Sheffield Eagles to Challenge Cup final victory over Wigan Warriors in 1998. However, they will cross swords on Sunday, when Kear’s Wakefield Trinity take on Deakin’s Oldham for a place in the last four of the Carnegie Challenge Cup. Kear, 53, who has regained the tag of being the oldest coach in the Super League following Peter Sharp’s departure from Hull FC, went on to coach the merged Huddersfield / Sheffield side and took on assistant roles with Wigan and Hull before his latest appointment He took Hull to cup final glory in 2005, in Cardiff, and has his sights set on becoming the first man to coach three different teams to cup success. Deakin, also 53, was assistant at London Broncos and Huddersfield Giants before landing the head coaching job with leading French club Union Treiziste Catalane (later Catalans Dragons) but was sacked just three months before their entry into the Super League.
