CHEPSTOW (subject to inspection)
3:50 Jenkinsons Caterers Welcome To Chepstow Racecourse Handicap, Class 5, 1m 2d 36y
Roodolph (4/1) was without a win in 2007, but put up a solid effort to score at Yarmouth last time. 5lb raise in the weights seems fair. However, best efforts have come on quicker ground though so questions to answer on this going. Davenport (5/2) returned to form at Goodwood latest, staying on strongly over a slightly shorter trip. At home on slower ground, so still looks on a good mark despite 5lb hike in weights. New Star (14/1) has dropped to a potentially good handicap mark, but was never sighted in two runs in 2008 (albeit in a slightly higher grade) and vulnerable at present.
LEICESTER
3:00 Ladbrokes.com Abbey Park Handicap, Class 4, 7f 9y
Romany Princess (9/2) was nominated by connections as one to note for this season in handicaps. Seasonal debut produced creditable third over this trip at Newbury earlier in the month. Runs off a 3lb higher mark here but seems reasonably treated and likely to go well. Tawzeea (5/1) didn’t have to be at her best to win at odds-on in 6f Hamilton maiden. However, had run respectably off this mark over that distance on previous start, and may well appreciate return to the longer trip. Divine Power (8/1) delighted trainer Ralph Beckett with a confidence-boosting 6f Salisbury maiden win (4 decent efforts in defeat as a juvenile). The return to the longer trip should present no problems and there could be more to come.
REDCAR
4:10 Weatherby’s Bank Handicap, Class 4, 5f
Malapropism (12/1) ran surprisingly well on reappearance but has not repeated it since. Virtually all wins come later in the year. The wearing of a visor revitalised him in the autumn, but he hasn’t worn it this year, and with it still left off, perhaps not his day today. King of Swords (13/2) is an able sprinter on his day and though his form tailed off after the spring in Ireland last year, he’s one to keep an eye on for new yard, even if latest second came in weaker contest than this. Ocean Blaze (7/2) was a progressive, speedy 5f filly on a sound surface in 2007. A little unlucky to catch an enigmatic, but able type on a going day at Lingfield latest, but won her only start here and bold showing expected.
