RACING PREVIEW – 22nd May – GOODWOOD, HAYDOCK, WETHERBY

GOODWOOD

2:50 Letheby & Christopher Festival Stakes, Listed Race, 1m 1f 192y

The impressive 2006 St Leger winner Sixties Icon put up a far better performance in Newmarket’s Jockey Club Stakes, earlier this month. Well placed, going nicely, he cruised up to Tranquil Tiger running into the Dip, but was then almost immediately swamped by Getaway, who challenged on his outside and was soon on top. However, this was much more like it and must take the beating. Blue Ksar was a respectable 3rd in October’s Darley Stakes at Newmarket. However, he carried his head high when asked to assert and has a long layoff to overcome. Spice Route travels well through his races but does not pick up as expected. A frustrating sort who has been tried over a variety of trips with similar results.

3:25 Thomas Eggar Stakes (Handicap), Class 2, 5f

Safari Mischief was the C & D winner of a Class 3 handicap at the beginning of the month. Luke Morris unleashed his mount late, to score comfortably. Should go close again, granted a decent pace. Sweet Afton was a decent 3rd in a Bath Listed race at the end of April. In form at this time last year and a bold showing is expected. Classic Encounter makes a quick reappearance. Ran fast up the stands rail at Thirsk, but faded quickly.
C & D winner of similar event this time last year and shouldn’t be written off completely.

HAYDOCK

3:35 Woodward Foodservice Handicap, Class 4, 7f 30y

Thannaan (9/4) won a small 7f Folkestone maiden at the end of April. The grey went five lengths clear and, having had a good look over his right shoulder and a glance over his left, Richard Hills started to ease him down well inside the final furlong and was nearly caught close home. Can probably be rated as having won by a couple of lengths. Blindspin (10/1) won an ordinary 7f Catterick maiden in April. He has plenty of scope and, provided he goes the right way, should make his mark in handicap company at around this trip. San Jose City (12/1) formerly with David Myerscough, in Ireland, made an encouraging seasonal bow at Southwell and would have clinched it in another stride.

4:10 Bank of Scotland Corporate Stakes (Handicap), Class 3, 1m 30y

Major Magpie (9/4) lost several lengths at the start at Haydock. Came from way back to take third and would be suited by a stronger gallop. Lord Theo (8/1) has run well on his last two starts, but appears to reserve his best for Yarmouth. Ansells Pride (5/1) lost all chance when hampered at the start at Beverley, and is perhaps better judged on his stylish April Musselburgh win. Made all the running and quicker ground may suit.

WETHERBY

3:10 Don’t Miss Ladies’ Evening 29th May Handicap Hurdle, Class 4, 2m

Mr. Aitch (3/1) was outstayed at Wetherby on ground which may not have been quick enough for him. Produced in good shape by Richard Phillips after a lengthy break and should be winning soon. Monsieur (3/1) raced keenly in the lead at Sedgefield, but faded. Beginning to find his form and along with slipping handicap mark, should find a race soon.

3:45 Plantronics & Rocom Novices’ Hurdle, Class 4, 2m 3f 110y

Falpiase (5/4) reappearing after a lengthy absence, ran well for a long way at Aintree, before the first two had his measure from three out. He is entitled to improve as a result. La Pantera Rosa (3/1) had no chance with the winner at Wetherby, but ran to form and should find a small race.
