RACING PREVIEW MAY 18th – FAKENHAM, MARKET RASEN, RIPON

RIPON
3:10 Ripon, Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse Handicap, Class 2, 1m
David Nicholls’ Fremen has performed creditably in some classy handicaps. Is undoubtedly better over a mile than shorter, acts on any ground, has slipped a few pounds in the weights and has his easiest assignment for some time. Linda Perratt’s Jewelled Dagger made the running at Ripon and kept on well to be a clear second. Four times a winner last season, resulting in a hike of some 40lb in the handicap. However, remains well capable of prevailing from current mark. John Quinn’s Another Bottle, a 5-times hurdles winner, has shown little of late, but has slipped to a winning mark. A C & D winner, boasting a 4-9 record on fast ground and 3-10 over a mile, he could potentially go well.
3:40 C.B. Hutchinson Memorial Challenge Cup (Fillies’ Handicap), Class 3, 6f
A disappointing field for a decent prize. Tim Easterby’s Gallery Girl, makes a quick reappearance after apparently failing to act on the AW at Southwell. Only just missed out at Redcar previously, and though 3lb higher, should go well back on turf. Top weight Angus Newz seemed to appreciate the easier ground when 2nd at Brighton, in a slightly better race. Faster ground and welter burden may just prove undoing. Richard Fahey’s Valley Of The Moon finished behind Gallery Girl at Redcar. May have been unsuited by the easy ground, is now 3lb better off and should finish closer.
MARKET RASEN
3:00 Drainage & Building Supplies Handicap Hurdle, Class 4, 2m 6f
Alan Swinbank’s Doris’s Gift was CD winner in first-time blinkers on penultimate start. Put up an improved show of jumping to follow up at Wetherby (minus the headgear), arrives in good nick and seems likely to go well in a hat-trick bid. That Look went clear turning in at Huntingdon, never looking like being caught. Has returned to form after some lacklustre efforts, but suspicion he is happiest at Huntingdon (3-3 there). Double Deputy has been out of form of late, but reserves his best efforts for here, so should not be entirely discounted.
FAKENHAM
3:20 Rex Carter Memorial Handicap Chase, Class 3, 3m 110y
Malcolm Jefferson’s Brooklyn Brownie ran far better in his latest outing at Perth, only fading after 2 out. Although all his wins have been at shorter trips, evidently gets 3m well, as the first 3 finished well clear of the rest. Paul Nicholls’ Kaldouas seems to travel well on the bridle, but finds little when asked to assert himself, and is best left alone for the time being. Jonjo O’Neill’s Englishtown, a C & D winner, has the assistance of champ Tony McCoy. Despite long layoff, cannot be left out of calculations.
