Club History

Liverpool Football Club play in the Premier League, and are the most successful club in the history of English football, having won more trophies than any other English club. The club was founded in 1892 enjoying limited success until the appointment of manager Bill Shankly. Shankly led the club to 3 League Championship titles, 2 FA Cups and the 1973 UEFA Cup. Despite a lean period in the 1990s, Liverpool’s fortunes revived with a cup treble in 2001 and a fifth European Cup in 2005.The club’s fans have been involved in two major disasters. At the Heysel Stadium Disaster, 39 Juventus fans died when a wall collapsed after crowd trouble in the 1985 European Cup Final, and the Hillsborough Disaster in 1989 where 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives. Liverpool has played at Anfield since their formation, but there are plans to move to a new stadium in Stanley Park, due to be completed by 2011.

Opportunities to Bet on Liverpool

Premiership Title
Liverpool won 18 First Division titles, but has not been successful in the Premier League. This is a record which pretty much speaks for itself. Liverpool are one of the “Big 4″ clubs, but since the inception of the Premiership, have trailed Manchester United, in particular, and Chelsea by some way. Liverpool betting odds generally have them as third or fourth-best at the beginning of the season. This seems about right, as they regularly become entangled in a third-place battle with Arsenal. A bet on Liverpool to fill a top-four place is almost a foregone conclusion, but betting on Liverpool to secure the title is quite another matter (at least for the time being).

Premiership Matches
Liverpool are particularly strong at Anfield and although the Liverpool odds may be short, they are useful for making up multiple bets. Contrastingly, some of Liverpool’s away form has been the underlying reason for their underachievement in recent seasons. Very often, the layers produce short Liverpool betting odds, based more on reputation than form, and value bets can often be found in opposing them away from Anfield.

Domestic Cup Competitions

FA Cup
Liverpool has been successful in the FA Cup seven times, most recently in 2001 and 2006. Given their enviable FA Cup record, Liverpool betting odds are often shorter than they should be, offering little value to the punter.

League Cup
Liverpool has won the League Cup a record seven times. The latest wins have come in 2001 and 2003. As with many other top clubs, Liverpool does not seem to regard the League Cup as being of any importance, regularly fielding a weakened side. As a result, any bet on Liverpool is fraught with danger, especially if the Liverpool odds are short. The League Cup is best avoided from a punting perspective, though value bets can be found in opposing top sides fielding weakened teams.

FA Community Shield
The Reds have been successful 15 times in this fixture, the latest wins coinciding with their FA Cup successes of 2001 and 2006. This fixture, played at the beginning of the season, in August, carries little prestige nowadays, and is probably best left alone for punting purposes.

European Competitions

UEFA Champions League
Liverpool has won five European Cups, which is an English record. Only one of these has come in the Premiership era, with the Reds beating AC Milan 3-2 on penalties, following a 3-3 draw in the 2005 Istanbul final. With regard to betting on Liverpool in the Champions’ League, they usually find themselves in a similar position to Arsenal, having to play a qualifying tie to reach the group stage of the competition. Punters would be well advised to take shorter Liverpool odds after they have qualified, rather than gambling on them reaching the group phase.

UEFA Cup
Liverpool has enjoyed UEFA Cup success 3 times, though only once in the Premiership era, beating Deportivo Alaves 5-4 in extra-time after a 4-4 draw after 90 minutes, in the Dortmund final of 2001. With Liverpool regularly qualifying for the Champions’ League in recent years, any discussion of betting on Liverpool in the UEFA Cup is redundant.

European Super Cup
Liverpool collected the Super Cup in the same season as their latest Champions’ League title (2005), seeing off UEFA Cup winners, CSKA Moscow 3-1, after extra-time, in Monaco. The Super Cup can present an opportunity to bet on Liverpool. However, this is, of course, dependent on the opposition and the Liverpool odds on offer.
