Club History
Arsenal were founded as Dial Square in 1886 by workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, but were renamed Royal Arsenal shortly afterwards. Having turned professional in 1891, they were further renamed to “Woolwich Arsenal”. In 1913, Arsenal moved to a new stadium in Highbury, North London, dropping “Woolwich” from their name. Arsenal dominated English football in the 1930s, winning 5 League titles and 2 FA Cups. Immediately following football’s suspension during World War II, Arsenal enjoyed further success, with League titles in 1948 and 1953, along with the 1950 FA Cup. However, the club’s fortunes to a nosedive and was devoid of trophies for most of the 50s and 60s. Arsenal achieved a first League and FA Cup double in 1970-71, but the subsequent decade was less than memorable, the club’s only success being the 1979 FA Cup, with a classic 3-2 victory over Manchester United. The club’s fortunes revived from the late 80s onwards, with a League Cup in 1987, and League titles in 1989 and 1991, the FA Cup / League Cup double in 1993 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1994.With a new training regime and several foreign players complementing existing English talent, Arsenal won a second league and cup double in 1997-98 and a third in 2001-02. In July 2006, they moved into their current stadium, the Emirates Stadium, after 93 years at Highbury.
Opportunities to Bet on Arsenal
Premiership Title
Arsenal has one of the best top-flight records in history, having finished below fourteenth only seven times. Their thirteen League Championships is the third highest in English football, only bettered by Liverpool and Manchester United. The Gunners gained the Premiership title in 1998, 2002 and 2004. Arsenal won the 2003-04 Premier League title without losing a match, the club going 49 league matches without defeat, a national record. The club is a member of the “Big 4″ in the Premier League (alongside Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool). However, the last decade has shown Arsenal to be some way behind Manchester United and Chelsea, usually finding themselves in a battle for third place with Liverpool. While betting on Arsenal to finish in the top 3 or 4 places in the Premiership may reap rewards, capturing the title has proved more elusive, as the Arsenal betting odds reflect.
Premiership Matches
As one of the “Big 4″ clubs, Arsenal betting odds in Premier League matches, especially at home, are very short. Given the unpredictable nature of the game, very short Arsenal odds are best left alone. However, for those who simply must bet on Arsenal, they can form useful “bankers” in multiple bets.
Domestic Cup Competitions
FA Cup
The Gunners’ total of ten FA Cups is the second highest, after Manchester United. Recent successes include 1993, 1998, 2002, 2003 and 2005. Arsenal is one of only five clubs to have won the Cup twice in succession (2002 / 2003). Arsenal has achieved three League and FA Cup “Doubles” (1971, 1998 and 2002), a record shared with Manchester United.
League Cup
Arsenal collected the 1993 League Cup with a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday. The Gunners are notorious for fielding below-strength sides for League Cup encounters. Nonetheless, given their overall standing, Arsenal odds are often short, so those wishing to bet on Arsenal should be wary. Value bets can often be obtained in this competition, especially when the Arsenal betting odds are very short, by opposing them, against lesser opposition.
FA Community Shield
Arsenal has been successful 12 times in the Community Shield, including 1998, 1999, 2002 and 2004 in the Premiership era. Arsenal betting odds are often short, and in a fixture that holds less prestige than it used to, they are best left alone.
European Competitions
UEFA Champions League
Arsenal was runner-up in the 51st renewal of the event, losing 2-1 in the Paris final, to Barcelona. Two late gaols gave the Spanish side the trophy, Arsenal having led at half-time. Arsenal was the first London club to reach the final of the UEFA Champions’ League. Those punters wishing to bet on Arsenal for the Champions League will do well to remember that they consistently reach the qualifying round, requiring a further win to reach the group stage of the competition. It is very much a matter of personal preference, as to whether to avail yourself of slightly longer Arsenal odds prior to reaching the group stage, or contenting yourself with shorter Arsenal betting odds once they are in the group phase.
UEFA Cup
Arsenal was runner-up to Galatasaray, of Turkey, in the 1999-2000 UEFA Cup, losing 4-1 on penalties after a goalless final.
UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup
Arsenal was successful in the Cup Winners’ Cup in the 1993-94 season, defeating Italians Parma 1-0 in Copenhagen.
European Super Cup
The 1994 UEFA Super Cup was contested between Arsenal and Italian side A.C. Milan (1994 UEFA Champions League winners). The two-legged final was won by Milan, courtesy of a 2-0 win at the San Siro, following a goalless draw at Highbury.
