French Open Betting – Bet on the Golf French Open

FRENCH OPEN BETTING – BET ON THE GOLF FRENCH OPEN – 26th June

History

The French Open was first played in 1906 and is the oldest national open in Continental Europe. It has been a European Tour event since its inception in 1972. The tournament used to be played at a variety of venues, but has now found a permanent home at Le Golf National, near Paris. British players have a good record in the event in recent years, having won 3 of the last 5 renewals; Graeme Storme in 2007, John Bickerton in 2006 and Philip Golding in 2003. Jean-Francois Remesy completed a “home” double for France in 2004 and 2005.

News / Key Players

Having withdrawn from the US Open at Torrey Pines, after just 14 holes, with a wrist injury, British hope Luke Donald has missed the BMW International Open in Munich and is a doubtful starter for next week’s French Open. Golf world number 17 Luke Donald hopes to head the European offensive in the French Open in Versailles. Donald is currently eighth in the Ryder Cup points list and 31st in the European table. He needs to be in the world top 5 or Europe’s top 5 to ensure automatic qualification for September’s Ryder Cup. A member of the past two victorious European Ryder Cup teams, Donald would be Lee Westwood, Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, Darren Clarke, Colin Montgomerie, Martin Kaymer, Rory McIlroy and Oliver Fisher. Ian Poulter also suffered a wrist injury at the US Open and is struggling to be fit for the French Open. 2001 winner, Jose Maria Olazabal is a definite absentee. The Spaniard, now 42, returned to the Tour after a seven month battle with rheumatism. However, in the six events he has played, Olazabal has suffered from fatigue. He has not competed since a missed cut at Wentworth in the PGA championship.

Lee Westwood’s impressive performance at the US Open means that he must surely start amongst the favourites for the French Open. German Martin Kaymer is currently tearing the course apart at the BMW International Open in Munich and must also “go to post” well fancied. Defending US Open Champion Angel Cabrera, BMW PGA Championship winner Miguel Angel Jimenez and Ryder Cup player Robert Karlsson are also among the star names that must appear near the head of the market.

The field, the strongest in recent years, will be bolstered by a host of home players. Jean-François Remesy, Thomas Levet and Gregory Bourdy, respectively winners of this year’s Open de Andalucía and Estoril Open de Portugal, will joined by fellow champions Gregory Havret, Raphael Jacquelin and Jean Van de Velde, along with one of French golf’s rising stars, 2007 Challenge Tour Number One, Michael Lorenzo-Vera.
