Golf: Stanford St Jude Classic – Singh and Toms amongst the favourites

GOLF – TENNESSEE STANFORD ST. JUDE CHAMPIONSHIP – June 5th

KEY PLAYERS / NEWS

The major consideration for the Stanford St Jude Classic in Memphis, Tennessee is which players are warming up for the US Open and which have their game in A1 condition for this tournament. Furthermore this is a physically demanding event, with temperatures likely to be in the mid-90s.

Heath Slocum boasts outstanding course form, with 2 finishes in the top 12 from his last 3 outings. He did little wrong in his closing 73 at the Wachovia Championship and seemed to just have one of those days when nothing really happened for him on the golf course. His good play has carried on with a T8 at the AT&T Classic and T26 at Colonial where he bounced back very well from an opening 74. His past record shows he is capable of stringing three or four good tournaments together and his prospects look good once more.

David Toms is a legend in this event but I don’t think he is operating at the level he was a couple of years ago after bouts of illness and injury, while the likes of Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia and Padraig Harrington are surely hoping to play themselves to a peak for the US Open.
