Golf: Austrian Open – Green & Clarke amongst the favourites
GOLF – VIENNA BA-CA OPEN – June 5th
Having spent the last three weeks on Great British soil (the Irish Open, BMW PGA Championship and Celtic Manor Wales Open) the European Tour returns to continental Europe for the third Telkom Austria Open. The tournament is again being played at Vienna’s Fontana Golf Club, with its huge, high-speed undulating greens. Although the fairways are also reasonably wide, water comes into play on ten holes.
KEY PLAYERS / NEWS
The Austrian Open suffers from its proximity to the U.S. Open, which gets underway at Torrey Pines, San Diego on Thursday June 12th. Many stars miss Austria, preferring to concentrate on preparations for the season’s second “Major.” Nevertheless, European stars such as Thomas Bjorn and Darren Clarke are including the Austrian Open in their schedules.
Other leading contenders include defending Champion Richard Green, who also finished in the top six in 2006. Paul McGinley performed well for the first half of the BMW PGA Championship and should go well in what is essentially a mediocre field. Jyoti Randhawa played superbly in the same tournament, finishing fifth. However, he has never won a Tour title. Jeev-Milkha Singh finished in the top ten at the Celtic Manor in the Wales Open.
Graeme McDowell surprisingly withdrew from US Open qualification at Walton Heath. However, victory here should be well within his compass. Markus Brier is a local favourite and something of a course specialist, winning the tournament in 2006. He was also successful when the event formed part of the Challenge Tour.
