The European Tour returns with a star-studded field for The Celtic Manor Wales Open, including six of the previous eight winners. All the major protagonists from the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth will be back in action, and are joined by current Open Champion, Padraig Harrington, who makes his debut in the Welsh event.

Wentworth winner Miguel Angel Jimenez will tee up as the second highest ranked player in the field (behind Harrington) after leaping 20 places up the official world rankings to Number 21. Jimenez, a previous winner at the Celtic Manor, has leapt to the head of the Ryder Cup points list and leads the European Tour order of merit after his Wentworth victory.

England’s Oliver Wilson, who succumbed to Jimenez at the second play-off hole at Wentworth moves up some 30 places to a world-ranked 45, while 2006 winner Swede Robert Karlsson, who narrowly missed out on the Wentworth play-off moves up to 30th in the world. The field also includes South African Richard Sterne, who produced four sub-68 rounds in triumphing by one shot in 2007, along with Niclas Fasth, Martin Kaymer and Soren Hansen, all ranked in the world’s top 50 players.

Along with Harrington and Karlsson, Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley, David Howell and Colin Montgomerie, all European representatives in the last Ryder Cup, are amongst the stars anxious for a first look at the Twenty Ten course, designed for the 2010 Ryder Cup. The winner’s purse has been increased to a record £300,000.
