GOLF – BELEK TURKISH WOMEN’S OPEN

Garanti Bank will be the main sponsor of the Turkey leg of the Ladies European Tour (LET), to be held May 8-11 at the National Golf Club in Belek, Antalya. The National Golf Club’s championship golf course was designed by Ryder Cup player David Feherty and Seniors Tour player David Jones. Carved through a forest of Eucalyptus and pine trees and with the backdrop of the snow-capped Taurus Mountains and an abundance of natural lakes, the course is located in the resort area of Belek, on the Mediterranean coast.

The €250,000 inaugural event will be the first official 72-hole stroke play Ladies European Tour event in Turkey. A field of 126 players will tee up initially, with a cut to the leading 60 players and ties after 36 holes.

Three Turkish golfers have been given “wildcard” entries to the event, allowing Necla Gerçek, Elçin Ulu and Müzeyyen Şaşmaz to compete with some of the world’s leading golfers.

England’s Lisa Hall, the ANZ Ladies Masters champion is fancied for the title in some quarters, along with last week’s Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open champion, Gwladys Nocera from France.

With its tight tree-lined fairways and abundance of water which comes into play on 10 holes, the course places emphasis on accuracy and a deft putting stroke. This may suit England’s Rebecca Hudson, who last week was hailed as perhaps “the best putter in the world” by Sky Sport commentator Mark Roe. However, playing at 6,419 yards, the National requires length and solid iron play. Most players have predicted a high winning score this week, particularly if the wind picks up. Martina Eberl, 26, 2007 Madrid Ladies Masters winner, remarked that the Belek course was challenging and exciting.

The tournament will also see the professional debut of 18-year-old British “starlet”, Henrietta Zuel. Zuel, who turned professional in March, has been dubbed as the future face of British golf. She enjoyed a successful amateur career and was the 2007 Girls’ British Amateur Champion. Speaking ahead of the Turkish Open, Zuel said, “I can’t wait. It will be great to get out on the Tour again and start playing. I haven’t played in a tournament for a while so it will be great to test my game out again. I’ve had so much to work on so it will be exciting.”
