Lewis Hamilton will win BBC Sports Personality 2007
Unless David Beckham manages to find a cure for the common cold, invent a time machine, and ensure that England didn’t wimper out of the World Cup last year, Lewis Hamilton will win the BBC Sports Personality of the year award for 2007.
As I write this, Lewis Hamilton is one Grand Prix win away from landing the F1 championship, and all in his rookie season. There’s very little doubt that he will do it, although whether he will do it in typical English fashion (spin out in both races, but somehow still scrape home with enough points) is yet to be seen. Either way, the English finally have a hero to worship. David Coulthard can go back to being Scottish.
There’s little doubt in my mind therefore, that Lewis Hamilton will win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award by a massive margin, and the bookies certainly agree with me – The current odds for Lewis to win are just 1/10 with Paddy Power, and the closest rival is Ricky Hatton all the way out at 8/1. Beyond that, there are a clutch of also-rans priced from 50/1 onwards.
But don’t waste your money – There’s only going to be one winner, and it is Lewis Hamilton. A much more interesting market is the current odds for who would win without Lewis Hamilton – Assuming Lewis wins, this is the market for second place. Again, Ricky Hatton looks a good bet at 7/4 with William Hill (assuming he doesn’t lose in the first to Floyd Mayweather on 9th December), closely followed by Frankie Dettori at 11/2 with skybet, and Joe Calzaghe and Johnny Wilkinson out at 16/1 and 20/1 respectively with Bet365.
A poll on the BBC Sports website currently has Lewis Hamilton leading the way with 58% of the votes, followed by Ricky Hatton on 16%, and Christine Ohuruogu on 6%, from just over 97,000 votes cast.
The BBC Sports Personality of the Year award will be shown live on BBC1 on Sunday 9th December 2007.
