FORMULA ONE – CANADIAN GRAND PRIX – June 8th
KEY DRIVERS / NEWS
The seventh round of the 2008 Formula One World Championship is the Canadian Grand Prix, at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Montreal’s Ile Notre Dame. Forecasters are predicting a wet weekend, from showers to thunderstorms. Victory at Monaco put Lewis Hamilton back into the lead of the Drivers’ Championship, and he is seeking to become this season’s first three race winner, at the circuit where he won his maiden Grand Prix last season. However, after Ferrari’s disappointing result at Monaco, it goes without saying that drivers Kimi Raikonnen and Felipe Massa will be suitably fired up, as each chases his own third victory of the season.
Meanwhile, the BMW Sauber pairing of Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld (3rd here last year), are also hungry, the German-Swiss team currently just a point behind second-placed McLaren in the constructor standings. Pole Kubica says that he has no qualms about the circuit despite a massive accident in 2007. The track has been modified at the point on the back straight where Kubica crashed. The wall that he hit on the outside has been moved closer to the track to reduce the impact angle should a car go off there in a similar fashion. Improved debris fencing has also been added, to reduce the possibility of debris being thrown across the wall into the path of cars exiting the hairpin.
