League Two Odds

LEAGUE TWO ODDS

Football League Two is the lowest division of The Football League and the fourth tier of the English football league system, made up of 24 teams.

Outright League 2 Winners

From a betting perspective, League Two is one of the most open markets, with even the favourites to win the title often quoted at a double-figure price in the pre-season League 2 odds. Bradford, Darlington, Gillingham, Shrewsbury and Wycombe were all prominent in the League Two win market at the start of the 2008-09 season. Wycombe have made an outstanding start to the season, unbeaten in 17 starts and topping the table by 4 points, with a game in hand. However, they are only marginal favourites over 4th placed Shrewsbury, with Bradford and Darlington close behind in the League 2 odds. Gillingham have shown poor away form and are now more than double their pre-season price. Dave Penney’s Darlington have shown some nice touches, both home and away and the 3rd place Quakers represent some sort of value amongst the market leaders.

League Two Promotion Odds

The top three teams, together with the winner of the play-offs between the teams which finished in 4th-7th position, are promoted to League One, being replaced by the four teams finishing at the bottom of that division. There is little value in the current 2008-09 League Two promotion odds, with the top five in the outright betting all trading at very short prices in the promotion market. Punters seeking some value in the promotion market may wish to consider Paul Tisdale’s Exeter City. Although they have struggled on occasions at St. James’ Park, the Grecians have shown excellent away form, which is often a major contributory factor to a successful promotion challenge.

League Two Relegation Odds

The two teams occupying the bottom two positions in League 2 are relegated to the Conference National. They are replaced by the winners of the Conference National and the winners of the playoffs between the 2nd to 5th placed sides in the Conference. Teams promoted from the Conference must fulfill several Football League criteria with regard to stadia and the like. If they fail to do so, they are not promoted and the bottom side(s) remain in League 2 for the following season. The 2008-09 League 2 odds market regarding relegation has been thrown into disarray by the Football League’s decision to deduct points from Luton, Bournemouth and Rotherham, due to their financial difficulties. Luton were deducted a massive 30 points and languish at the foot of the table with -11 points from 17 games. Needless to say, they trade at long odds-on in the League Two relegation market. Bournemouth are also still in minus figures and are second best for the drop. Rotherham, however, have managed to overtake Grimsby and now trade at double figures in the League Two odds for relegation. Grimsby have been absolutely dire in the 2008-09 season, winning just one game and scoring only 14 goals. They must represent by far the best value in the League 2 odds for relegation.

League Two Top Goalscorer Odds

Given the competitive nature of the division, any number of players could finish as leading scorer, making a bet on this market a risky proposition. It is surprising that no player from table-topping Wycombe figures prominently in the League Two odds for top scorer, but they have been less than prodigious in front of goal. Bradford’s Peter Thorne is the market leader with 11 goals, followed by Chesterfield’s Jamie Ward and Dagenham’s Paul Benson with 12 apiece. The one player that appeals as a betting proposition in the League 2 odds for top goalscorer is Grant Holt of Shrewsbury. This 6ft striker has scored 10 times in the league, but has added a further 8 in the FA Cup and Football League Trophy and looks value at the prices on offer.
