UEFA Cup Winner Betting

UEFA Cup betting odds can be fraught with danger for the football punter, particularly at an early stage of the competition. Without knowing which teams will enter the UEFA Cup from the Champions’ League, UEFA Cup odds can represent poor value.Italy leads the UEFA Cup field with 9 titles, with Juventus (1977, 1990 and 1993) and Inter Milan (1991, 1994 and 19998) both 3-time winners. The Germans also boast 6 UEFA Cup winners, with Borussia Monchengladbach dual winners in 1975 and 1979, along with wins for Anderlecht (1983), Frankfurt (1980), Bayer Leverkusen (1988) and Bayern Munich (1996). England have also enjoyed UEFA Cup success, their 6 wins including 3-times winners Liverpool (1973, 1976 and 2001). Spanish sides have won 5 times, including back-to-back successes for Sevilla in 2006 and 2007.

UEFA Cup Qualification

The UEFA Cup is a European competition, being the second most important European competition after the UEFA Champions’ League. Clubs qualify for the UEFA Cup based on their performance in national leagues and cup competitions. More qualifying places are offered to more successful footballing nations. Usually, places are awarded to teams who finish in various runners-up places in the top-flight leagues of Europe and the winners of the main cup competitions. More recently, clubs that are knocked out of the qualifying round and the group stage of the Champions League can also join the UEFA Cup, at different stages. In addition, losers in the third qualifying round of the Champions League also enter this round, and another place is reserved for the title-holders. After the first round proper, the 40 survivors enter a group phase, with the clubs being drawn into eight groups of five each. The top three teams in each group advance to the two-legged knockout phase, joined by the eight third-place teams in the Champions League group phase.

Qualifying Group Betting

The top three sides from each of the eight groups qualify for the knockout phase, with bookmakers such as Blue Square, Bet365 and 888sport offering UEFA Cup odds on the group winners. Additionally, UEFA cup betting odds are available, with some layers (particularly Betfair), for a team to qualify from a particular group.

English Team to Win UEFA Cup

One or two layers (including Stan James) are offering UEFA Cup betting odds on an English club achieving 2008-09 UEFA Cup success. Given the individual UEFA cup odds on offer for Aston Villa, Tottenham, Manchester City and Portsmouth, these UEFA Cup betting odds offer good value.

Leading Contenders

Given that 4 nations have collected 26 out of 36 UEFA Cups, it comes as no surprise to see the 2008-09 UEFA Cup odds market dominated by teams from Italy, Spain, England and Germany. Milan are clear favourites, followed by La Liga representatives Sevilla and Valencia. The English Premier League sides are well to the fore in the UEFA Cup odds, with Germans Udinese and Schalke 04 just behind.
