WORLD CUP BETTING – BET ON THE 2010 WORLD CUP
For betting purposes, it seems safe to rule out Africa, Asia and Oceania as suppliers of the 2010 World Cup winners, along with hosts South Africa. This leaves South America and Europe upon which to concentrate.
Four teams from ten qualify from the CONMEBOL (South America), with the fifth-placed side involved in a playoff with a CONCACAF (Caribbean, Central and North American Confederation) nation. The nine European group winners qualify automatically, with the best eight runners-up involved in two-legged playoffs to determine the other four qualifiers, i.e. 13 in all.
South America
One third (6 out of 18) of the qualifying matches in the have already been played in South America. Paraguay surprisingly tops the group with 13 points, followed by Argentina with 11, Colombia and Chile with 10 each and Brazil with 9. The likely qualifiers are Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, with any two from Colombia, Chile and Uruguay.
Europe
In the 9 European groups, Germany, Holland and Italy seem certain to qualify automatically, with Spain and France also seeming fair propositions. Other likely automatic qualifiers are Greece, the Czech Republic, England and Portugal. Those qualifying for the playoffs are likely to be Sweden, Switzerland, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Croatia, Romania and Ireland, while Scotland has every chance with Norway, Macedonia and Iceland in their qualifying group.
With so many imponderables, it is far from easy to arrive at a shortlist this stage, so it seems sensible to concentrate on reasonably certain qualifiers, either automatically or via the playoffs. This reduces the shortlist to: Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Czech Republic, England and Portugal.
Paraguay at 150/1 with skybet seems safe to dismiss, as do Greece at 200/1 with Stan James. However, this still leaves 10 teams from which to produce potential World Cup Winners. Portugal, in particular has a treacherous qualifying group, with Sweden and Denmark in opposition, is not guaranteed even to finish second, and so is dismissed. Despite their odds-on status, the Czech Republic is no certainty in Group 3, with Poland and an in-form Northern Ireland to contend with. Neither Slovakia nor Slovenia can be entirely written off in the same group, so we’ll put a line through the Czechs. In Group 5, Spain is drawn with Turkey, who performed well at Euro 2008, while the Belgians could also play a part. Adiós España! Group 6 looks like a toss-up between England and Croatia and neither appeal as potential World Cup winners.
Potential Winners
The remaining contenders are Brazil (5/1 with William Hill), Argentina (11/2 with vcbet), Italy (11/1 with skybet), Germany (12/1 with Paddy Power), France (16/1 with William Hill) and Holland (16/1 with Ladbrokes). The final draw for World Cup 2010 does not take place until December 2009, so even assuming all the above qualify, there is no way of telling with whom they will be drawn. Despite their five World Cups, 5/1 about Brazil at this stage represents no value, while the same can be said for Argentina at 11/2.
France is in need of a new generation of players and the Azzurri, despite being the current holders, just don’t set my world alight.
The recommended bets, with the hope of qualifying and a favourable draw in South Africa, are Holland at 16/1 with Ladbrokes and Germany at 12/1 with Paddy Power. God bless us and all who sail in us!
