Next Chelsea Manager Odds: Mancini a done deal?

What usually happens after a manager is sacked is all the bookies release the odds of the likely (and not-so-likely) candidates to take over, and then tens of thousands of people pour their money down the drain betting on Martin O’Neill, Sam Allardyce or Glenn Hoddle. The situation at Stamford Bridge is a very different one however - Barely a week after their loss to Manchester United in the Champions League final which lead to the sacking of Avram Grant for losing 3 games in 7 months, almost all the UK bookmakers have closed the book on who will be the next Chelsea manager, and refusing to take bets.

William Hill even sent out a press release earlier this week with their prices, only to close the book even quicker. Blue Square were offering prices yesterday, but are now refsuing to take bets. Coral were one of the ambassadors of “Next Manager” bets, but even they won’t take your money on who will be the next Chelsea manager. Why do the bookies close their books? An educated guess would tell you that they don’t like losing money, and once word gets out that a decision has been made (even if it’s not announced for several days), they will refuse to take bets to avoid getting stung by those with insider information.

In fact, if you want to place a bet, then you’ll have to head over to the betting exchanges - we found the following odds at Betfair:

  • Roberto Mancini - 9/4
  • Carlo Ancenotti - 5/1
  • Mark Hughes - 6/1
  • Luis Scolari - 8/1
  • Frank Rijkaard - 11/1
  • Guus Hiddink - 18/1
  • Sven goran Eriksson - 22/1
  • Didier Deschamps - 43/1
  • Marcelop Lippi - 90/1

As you can see, Roberto Mancini is the clear favourite at Betfair, which could (and I stress, could!) suggest that he is likely to become the next Chelsea manager shortly. Or, of course, it could still be one of the outsiders (Bookies were still offering odds of 66/1 on Kevin Keegan returning to Newcastle on the MORNING of his unveiling!) Mancini was sacked an Inter boss in midweek as a result of comments he made following their Champions League exit at the hands of Liverpool, and favourite to take over at Inter is.. former Chelsea “Special One” Jose Mourinho. for those with more money than sense, you can even get around 40/1 on Mourinho returning as Blues boss!

As always, bet at your own risk, and only what you can afford to lose. All odds correct at time of writing. Please click here for the latest odds

My money is on Carlo Ancenotti and lay off Mancini.

Ancenotti has said he doesn’t want the job, Mark Hughes has taken Sven’s job at Man City, and Sven’s gone to Mexico. All of which has seen Frank Rijkaard jump from 11/1 outsider to 7/2 favourite, just ahead of Big Phil Scolari (9/2).

Roberto Mancini remains in the frame, but his odds have lengthened to 15/2.

It also appears that Betfair remains the only bookie taking bets on who will be the next chelsea manager.

    Got something to say?
