Who folllows Megson? Next Sheffield Wednesday boss.

by Timothy Masters on March 1, 2012

It didn’t last long for the Ginger Mourinho, but Gary Megson must be disappointed to get the sack just days after beating the Old Enemy in the Steel City derby. Lying third in the table at the moment, but five points off their neighbours in second, the Owls will attract a few candidates aware of the potential at a club of this size.

There are a fair few managers floating around at present, with Mick McCarthy (6/1) having recently been quite understandably sacked by Wolves after a bad run of results. Lee Clark (4/1) lost his job in more inexplicable circumstances, given how well Huddersfield had been doing, but the former Newcastle midfielder could be the ideal man, with his knowledge of the league.

The favourite is former Wolves and Cardiff man Dave Jones, at 2/9, and this is a man who has endured some appalling times in football, so he can deal with pressure. Some of the more left-field of the potential candidates include Nicky Butt (40/1), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (40/1) and Benito Carbone (66/1), while Paul Ince is currently looking to get back into management.

What is for sure is that anyone coming in will need significant fortitude to deal with one of the most demanding supporter bases outside the Premiership, not to mention Milan Mandaric, who has admitted he may not be popular with the fans for getting rid of Megson. If they go up at the end of the year all will be forgotten, but that’s a big if right now.
