Champions League: Inter Milan v Liverpool betting preview

Inter Milan v Liverpool – Tuesday 11th March 2008, 19:45 kickoff, San Siro

Liverpool take a precious 2-0 lead into the second-leg of their last-16 tie against Italian side Inter Milan on Tuesday evening at the San Siro, and should see a safe passage through to the quarter finals along with fellow English sides Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal as the odds of an all-English final look ever smaller (The current odds for an English team to win the Champions League are just 8/15 with Bet 365).

History isn’t on their side though – Last time Liverpool took a two-goal lead into the away leg of a European tie against Inter, they lost 3-0 in Italy. Rafa Benitez will know what he has to do to avoid a similar result this time around.

Xabi Alonso has been excused from the squad traveling to Italy, as his wife is due to give birth. Steve Finnan also misses out through a hamstring injury, but Mascherano should be fit to play after shrugging off a groin injury. Marco Materazzi is suspended for Milan after picking up two yellow cards in the return fixture at Anfield two weeks ago, whilst the Italian league-leaders may also be without Christian Chivu thanks to a shoulder injury, although striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic should return from a knee injury to face the Reds.

Inter are the favourite to win this tie, with VC Bet offering 17/20 on Inter to beat Liverpool. Bet 365 have the best odds for the draw (5/2), whilst the odds for Liverpool to beat Inter Milan are currently 15/4 (Paddy Power).

First Goalscorer Betting

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the bookies favourite to score first, with Boylesports offering 5/1 for the returning striker. Cruz is next best in the odds with 11/2 on offer (also from Boylesports). Hernan Crespo is 6/1 to score first with William Hill. skybet have Suazo to score first at 13/2.

It’s hard to bet against Fernando Torres scoring at the moment, and when Boylesports offer odds like 7/1 on him scoring first against Inter, it’s even harder! Peter Crouch is 10/1 with Ladbrokes, and Steven Gerrard is the same price with Boylesports. Dirk Kuyt is 11/1 with totesport. For an outside bet, how about Jamie Carragher to score on his 100th European game (currently 80/1 to score first with VC Bet)?
