England v Switzerland betting preview

The first game of the Fabio Capella era kicks off at Wembley on Wednesday evening when England take on Euro 2008 co-hosts Switzerland in a friendly. Capello has already demonstrated that tactics come before sentiment by excluding David Beckham from the squad for the game that would have brought Beckham’s 100th England cap, and England fans will be hoping that Capello will make better use of the friendly games to actually learn something about best teams, formations etc that his predecessors McClaren and Erricsson ever did.

The big question will be who does Capello choose to start up front for England? Whilst Michael Owen isn’t exactlybanging them in for Newcastle, his England record speaks for itself (40 goals in 88 games). Which is exactly why Fabio Capello should leave him out. Friendlies should be used to work out Plan B’s and Plan C’s, not to win every one 4-0, and I think Capello will be of this thinking. He won’t care what the press think if he learns something from a 1-1 draw, and at the end of the day, that’s best for England in the long run. The press has picked the team for too long now.

Match Result Betting

Boyle Sports have the best available odds for an England win, with lean odds of 1/2. Bet365 have the draw at 14/5, whilst Paddy Power have the best odds for Switzerland to win at 7/1.

Correct Score Betting

The correct score betting market offers much better odds, with Boyle Sports offering 11/2 on England to win 1-0 or 2-0. A convincing 3-0 victory will net you 10/1 at Blue Square.

VC Bet (formally victor Chandler) have the 0-0 draw at 11/1, whilst skybet will give you 100/1 for a thrilling 3-3 draw.

For the real long-shots, Ladbrokes have a 5-0 England Victory at 100/1, whilst Paddy Power will give you 500/1 odds on a 7-0 England steamrollering. And if you fancy throwing your money away, Paddy Power will also take your money at 500/1 on Switzerland to win 10-0.

First Goalscorer Betting

Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney are the favourites to score first, with BlueSq.com offering 9/2 on them both. Bet365 have the best odds for Peter Crouch (5/1) to continue his fine return of goals in an England shirt, and Jermaine Defoe at 11/2.

Stan James have priced Steven Gerrard at 8/1, whilst BlueSq price Joe Cole at 10/1. VC Bet still think it’ll be a 0-0 and have 11/1 for no goalscorer.

If you fancy a long-shot, then Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves at 33/1 each (Blue Square and William Hill respectively) could be worth looking at.

Alternatively, if the game is looking like a tense affair, it may be worth betting “in-play” for one of the players on the bench, as they are more likely to play some part in the match than in a competitive match, and their odds will be much higher whilst they’re on the bench.

The following odds will update to include “in-play” odds during the match.

All odds correct at time of writing. Please check Searchum Odds for the latest Odds.
