Next Sunderland Manager Odds
Following Sunderland’s survival in the Premier League on the last day of the season, Ricky Sbragia decided to step down as Sunderland boss, and the market opened on who would be the next manager of Sunderland. Gordon Strachan was an early favourite having resigned as Celtic boss. However it looks as though the man Sunderland want is current Wigan boss Steve Bruce – The Lactics paid Birmingham £3m to prise Bruce from St Andrews, and they would want at least that amount to let him leave.

The following was written in December 2008…
Following Roy Keane’s decision to quit as manager of Sunderland last week, bookies have been clamouring around former Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce as the red-hot favourite to take over the managers office at the Stadium of Light. Big Sam has been out of work since being sacked by Newcastle in January 2008, but is clear favourite to take over at Sunderland.
At the time of writing, the next Sunderland manager odds were as follows: Sam Allardyce was at as best priced 2/1 (skybet), Alan Curbishley was at 5/1, followed by former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier (12/1, ladbrokes) and ex-Chelsea manager Avram Grant at 14/1 (Victor Chandler). Peter Reid, who already held the managers job at Sunderland has expressed an interest in the vacancy, but it would appear that his interest is not reciprocated, and the odds of Reid landing the job are way out at 25/1 (skybet).
Others in the running include David O’Leary, Gordon Strachan and Gary McAllister (all at 16/1), Hull City’s Phil Brown (22/1) and former Spurs boss Martin Jol (25/1). The more “outside” contenders for the next sunderland manager odds are Newcastle United Hero Alan Shearer at 100/1 (which is the same odds for the current Newcastle caretaker Joe Kinnear), 80/1 for former boss Mick McCarthy to return, and 100/1 for Niall Quinn to have another crack at being manager as well as chairman (he sacked himself last time, with the club bottom of the championship!)
Who will be the next Sunderland Manager? The odds say it’ll be big Sam Allardyce, but how often do the odds reflect who actually gets the job?
