England coach, Peter Moores, has reassured Steve Harmison that he has not been forgotten, despite overlooking him for the second npower Test against New Zealand. The 29-year-old Durham fast bowler may have thought he was in the running for a recall as a replacement for rival Matthew Hoggard, who suffered a broken left thumb after being accidentally hit by Harmison batting for Yorkshire last week. Despite an impressive record at Old Trafford (the last five-wicket haul of his 56-Test career was at the ground in a match total of 11 wickets, against Pakistan, two years ago), England instead called up Hampshire’s Chris Tremlett.

Moores also underlined the importance of Michael Vaughan’s leadership to England’s developing Test side if they are to challenge Australia for the Ashes next summer. Vaughan’s place has been in jeopardy in recent months, averaging only 20 during the Test series in New Zealand. He answered his critics with a defiant 106, to help England claim a narrow first innings lead in the drawn opening Lord’s Test.

England seamer Ryan Sidebottom has risen to a career-high of sixth in Test cricket’s bowling rankings, making him England’s highest-ranked bowler. Sidebottom continued his progress, taking six wickets in the first Test at Lords, following a twenty-four wicket haul on the recent tour of New Zealand.

Captain Michael Vaughan is backing England’s young attack to deliver when they travel north to face New Zealand in the second npower Test at Old Trafford. England’s attack struggled to make progress on the final day at Lord’s, allowing the tourists to escape with a draw. However, Vaughan is confident Ryan Sidebottom, James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Monty Panesar can deliver on the livelier Old Trafford pitch.

Recent Lord’s debutant Daniel Flynn has been challenged to become New Zealand’s version of Ricky Ponting.
Left-hander Flynn played his part in securing a draw in the opening npower Test, taking three hours over an unbeaten 29. Skipper Daniel Vettori has offered his Northern District’s team-mate a permanent spot at number six, which he hopes will form a sound basis for a higher-order place.
