PREVIOUS MEETINGS

Juventus and Real Madrid have met on 4 previous occasions in the Champions’ League, with the home side being successful on each occasion. In 2002-03 and 2004-05 Juventus won 3-1 and 2-0 respectively in Turin, while Real Madrid won the return fixtures at the Bernabeu 2-1 and 1-0 respectively.

CURRENT FORM

Juventus
Juventus have started quietly in Serie A, with 9 points from 6 games, currently residing in 11th place. In their Champions’ League opening fixture, a 76th minute free kick from veteran striker Alessandro Del Piero was sufficient for Juventus to repel Zenit St. Petersburg. Juventus’ subsequent visit to Belarus proved something of a surprise. The minnows of the group, BATE Borisov, took control of the game through Sergei Kryvets after 17 minutes and Igor Stasevich 6 minutes later. However, Vincenzo Iaquinta saved the visitors’ blushes with goals on 29 minutes and the stroke of half-time to salvage a 2-2 draw.

Real Madrid
Real Madrid have started more convincingly, with 13 points from 6 games and 5th spot in the Spanish Primera Liga. Their Champions’ League form cannot be faulted, with a maximum six points from their first two starts. Real Madrid’s opening fixture saw them cruise to victory over BATE Borisov in a one-sided game where the Spanish champions’ dominance was not reflected by the 2-0 scoreline. An 11th minute strike from Sergio Ramos and a 57th minute goal from Ruud van Nistelrooy had the game in safe keeping before the dismissal of BATE’s Anri Khagush made their uphill task an impossible task. Real Madrid’s second outing saw them defeat a spirited Zenit St Petersburg, making their home Champions’ League debut, 2-1. A 4th minute own goal by Zenit defender Tomas Hubocan and an opportunistic 31st minute strike by Ruud van Nistlerooy gave the nine-times European champions their second consecutive victory. Portuguese international Danny, Zenit’s record ?30 million signing from Dynamo Moscow, was on target after 25 minutes. The UEFA Cup holders, making their Champions League debut this season, are still looking for their first points.

TEAM NEWS

Juventus
Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and winger Mauro Camoranesi face some time on the sidelines, having both picked up thigh injuries in the recent Serie A loss to Palermo. Buffon has a tear to his right thigh and was advised that recovery would take in the region of a month. The ‘keeper, who has only just returned from a similar injury, will miss the home Champions’ League fixture against Real Madrid and is doubtful for the return fixture at the Bernabeu on November 5th. Camoranesi’s injury is less serious, but he still faces a race against time to be fit for the home Real Madrid fixture.

Real Madrid
Arjen Robben faces a race to be fit for Real Madrid’s Champions’ League trip to Juventus after the winger suffered a left thigh injury during a recent 2-2 Liga draw with Espanyol. Robben started the second half as a substitute, but the 24-year-old only lasted 19 minutes. After various tests, the club revealed they hoped to have him back in just over 2 weeks. Robben will miss the Netherlands’ World Cup qualifiers against Iceland and Norway, but both Madrid and the Dutch national side have been boosted by the news that Wesley Sneijder successfully came through the Espanyol game, having been out since pre-season with a knee injury.
