North Confident of Progressing
Wales’ wing wonder George North has admitted his side have been given no favours in the group stages of the upcoming World Cup, with South Africa, Namibia, Fiji and Samoa standing between the Welsh and a place in the quarter-finals. An opening game clash against the defending world champions South Africa will certainly give the Welsh no time to ease themselves into the tournament, with Fiji lying in wait in the final group game, one which could be defining. The Betfair Rugby Union odds provide a good indication of their chances.
Winger North was studying for his GCSE’s when Wales met Fiji in the group stage of the 2007 World Cup, the Pacific Islanders going on to claim a famous 38-34 victory, robbing the Welsh a place in…

Warburton selected to lead Wales
Cardiff Blues flanker Sam Warburton was this week selected as the youngest man to ever lead Wales into a World Cup having taken over the reins from the injured Matthew Rees who will miss the tournament entirely with a neck injury that requires surgery. Wales’ previous regular open-side flanker Martyn Williams has been omitted from the squad entirely which means that the Cardiff Blues man will now most likely be forced to retire on his tally of 99 international caps – increased following his substitute appearance against Argentina on Saturday – unless an injury to the back row forces coach Warren Gatland’s hand. These changes are undoubtedly going to affect the 2011 Rugby World Cup betting.
Warburton has already earned seventeen caps for Wales, and proved to Gatland…

New Zealand in imperious form
The All Blacks are in such good form at present following wins over both South Africa and Australia in this year’s Tri-Nations competition, that they are expected to name a second string XV for their upcoming away fixture against the beleaguered Springboks. Having already hammered the Boks 40-7 at home, coach Graham Henry has named a 25-man squad for their impending away leg with the squad consisting of 13 forwards and 12 backs with Keven Mealamu being named as captain in Richie McCaw’s absence. Those looking at the Rugby Union World Cup betting will be wondering how they will get on.
Henry will argue that having won the opening two games of the tournament, he has earned the right to rest some of his stars with the World…

Can South Africa hold on to their World crown?
South Africa are less than a month away from beginning the defence of the World Cup trophy they won in 2007, but there is one hitch. They are in terrible form.
The Springboks have so far played three games in the Tri Nations that leads straight on to the World Cup and have lost all three as head coach Peter De Villiers continues to field inexperienced line ups to take on Australia and New Zealand, two of the strongest teams in world rugby at the moment.
There is huge pressure on De Villiers to turn around the fortunes of South Africa to the point that there have been suggestions he should be removed from his role before the World Cup – something that is highly unlikely- but is…

Johnson assesses Moody injury
England coach Martin Johnson has given captain Lewis Moody time to prove his fitness before ruling him out of the forthcoming World Cup.
Moody underwent a scan yesterday which confirmed he had sustained a mild strain of the medial ligament in his right knee after being carried off in the 23-19 friendly win over Wales at the weekend.
The Rugby Football Union are optimistic over Moody’s progress but have understandably set no target date for his return.
Moody received the nasty looking injury when his team-mate Tom Palmer fell on his leg at a lineout after 61 minutes of the game at Twickenham.
The news comes as a huge blow to England’s preparation’s for next month’s showpiece event and has significantly hampered their preparations. It might…

Can England make it through the warm ups unbeaten?
With the World Cup looming large on the horizon, England could be forgiven for taking one eye off the ball and disregarding their series of warm up games against their major European rivals.
That is something that head coach Martin Johnson was unlikely to let happen as he runs the rule over his squad of 40 as he looks to narrow that figure down to 30 by the August 22nd deadline. Although Johnson only fielded four of the players that started against Wales in the 6 Nations earlier this year, there is no doubt that that he will be desperate to gain momentum going into the major tournament next month.
One of either Australia, South Africa, or most likely new Zealand have been handed a golden opportunity disguised…

Australia reclaim second spot
Australia have reclaimed second place in the Rugby World Rankings following their 39-20 thumping of South Africa last weekend in Sydney. The match was the opening game of this year’s shortened Tri-Nations campaign, coming just a week after the Aussies were humbled at the same venue by Samoa. Robbie Deans’ men produced some scintillating rugby to see off an under-strength Springboks side, reclaiming the second spot they had surrendered following the Samoa upset in the process. Anyone following the World Cup betting will have been impressed.
Returning key players seemed to give the Aussies a fresh impetus against the defending world champions South Africa, who themselves will have plenty to ponder in the next few weeks ahead of their defence of the Webb Ellis trophy in New Zealand…

Jenkins eyes return to action
Welsh prop forward Gethin Jenkins will be one of a number of players looking to impress Warren Gatland in the upcoming friendly matches next month. The three warm-up games, two against England and one against Argentina, will be used as Wales continue their World Cup preparations ahead of September’s start. Jenkins has returned to action after surgery on a foot injury and will be hoping to make the final cut as Gatland finalises his final 30-man squad. Those following the Betfair rugby betting will be keeping a close eye on the situation.
On Jenkins’ side will be his vast experience at international level. The 76-cap prop has established himself as one of the most effective players in his position in world rugby. The British Lion will most likely…
