Where to find the best results on Premiership Football

The Barclay’s Premier League is the top football league in the world and is watched by millions of people in different countries across the globe. You can get a free £10 bet on the result of any Premier League game when you join Blue Square. Football’s popularity as the world sport is reflected in the Premiership’s global reach, with fans in countries from the United States to China. So the question becomes, where do fans of the World’s game find results from the most high profile domestic league? What information can fans expect to find?

In the Information Age, the internet is the best place to find all the necessary information on Premiership football. Several websites exist, like BBC Sport and Yahoo UK, which provide up to date information such as breaking news, match previews, and recaps of all the action in the Premier League. Visitors to these websites can expect to find in depth articles recapping each match from the midweek and weekend in the Premiership, with analysis of the game and statistical information regarding time of goals, goal scorers, and substitutes.

At the end of the match recap, most box scores list the date, location, and kickoff time of the match. General match statistics are then followed by a list of the goal scorers from the match. Most websites list only the last name of the goal scorer with a number next to their name, sometimes in parenthesis, indicating when the goal was scored. Below goal scoring information the names of any players booked during the match will be listed with an indicator signifying either a yellow or red card along with a time stamp. The final bit of statistical information included on most websites is a full roster list of players who participated. Most websites will put the last name of another player in parenthesis next to the name of the starter they replaced in the squad, usually with a time stamp to indicate when during the match the substitution occurred.

Liverpool Premiership Odds for the current Premiership season see the Reds as 9/2 third favourites to take the title this season. Liverpool are many peoples’ favourites in Premiership betting, and Rafael Benitez’s men will be looking to go one better this season than last season, when they finished a creditable and close second to Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United.

Sky Bet offer Premiership Odds for the Premiership Top Goalscorer also, and you can back Liverpool players to be top goalscorer in the Premiership. The odds see Fernando Torres, Liverpool’s premier striker, as favourite in the betting at 7/2. Stephen Gerrard, Liverpool’s enigmatic and talismanic captain, is available to bet at odds of 16/1. No other Liverpool players feature highly in the Premiership top goalscorer betting odds.

Of course, the unthinkable could happen this season, and Liverpool could actually get relegated! This is very unlikely of course, but after their opening day defeat against Tottenham at White Hart Lane, who knows? Liverpool Premiership Odds for relegation see the Reds as a massive 2000/1 for the drop. So if you were to put £10 on Liverpool to get relegated, these odds would see you net a £20,000 profit, which would go some way to easing the pain for Liverpool supporters.

Other Liverpool Premiership Odds offered by skybet see the Reds at 1/5 to finish in the Top 4 and cement their position as a Top 4 team with the threat of Manchester City looming on the horizon; and 20/1 to win the handicap Premiership market, which sees Liverpool given 4 points in a handicap league where all other teams are given certain extra points, for example Burnley +53.

It’s always dangerous writing these season-long odds previews after just one game of the premiership season, but that’s the risk you take (Which normally results in me tipping someone for the golden boot, only for them to be ruled out for the rest of the season with a nasty injury!). Anyway, in this article, we take a look at Manchester City’s latest big-money signing (actually by the time you read this, he’ll probably be one of their cheaper purchases!) Emmanuel Adebayor, who made the move north from Arsenal in the summer.

Get a Free £25 bet on the Top Premiership Goalscorer when you open a new Blue Square account today. Conditions apply – see website for full details.

At the time of writing, the Togolese striker was priced at a rather attractive 18/1 by Paddy Power and totesport, behind Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba, Wayne Rooney, and Nicolas Anelka. If Adebayor can replicate the form he showed in the 2007/08 season for Arsenal that saw him bag 24 goals in 36 games, then there’s no reason why he can’t compete for the premiership top scorer accolade this season. Of course if he does not hit that form, then City have no shortage of strikers ready and willing to take his place in the team.

The table below will update as the season progresses with the very latest Top Scorer Odds for the Premiership, so you can easily follow the odds for Emmanuel Adebayor or any other player.

Chelsea’s Community Shield win over Manchester United has seen the London club leap-frog the champions in Paddy Power’s latest betting to win this year’s Premier League.

Chelsea are now the 2/1 favourites to win their first league title since 2006 with United slipping back from 15/8 to 21/10.

Liverpool and Arsenal continue to make up the Big Four with Liverpool slipping back to 10/3 from 3s and Arsenal at 8/1. Man City are seen as the team most likely to break the Big Four monopoly, being 12/1 for the title and 6/4 for a Top Four finish.

Fergie 9/1 To Be First To Feel FA Wrath

The Wembley match also showed Sir Alex Ferguson is as up for a new season as ever, berating ref Chris Foy on the pitch. Fergie is Paddy Power’s 9/1 second favourite to be the first manager charged by the FA this season behind Hull City’s Phil Brown. Although the betting starts from the first day of the Premier League season only, the fiery Scot is clearly showing no signs of calming down as United chase a fourth league title in a row.

Essien New Player of the Year Favourite

Meanwhile Steven Gerrard has been usurped by Michael Essien as the favourite to be crowned PFA Player of the Year. The Chelsea midfielder is 6/1 with Gerrard slipping back to 7/1. Andrei Arshavin has been the big punters move from 14/1 to 10/1 third favourite.

Paddy Power’s many other betting markets on the season ahead include Golden Boot winner, what trophies the big boys will win, doubles on the teams to finish top and bottom, Michael Owen’s first injury at new club Man Utd and which player will commit the most fouls this season.

Paddy Power PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW BETTING

Trebles All Round!!

If you back a team to win the Premier League and they win the double (Premier League and FA Cup) Paddy Power will DOUBLE the odds, if they win the treble (League, FA Cup and Champions League) we will TREBLE the odds!

PREMIERSHIP TITLE ODDS

The English Premier League is the primary football competition in the country. The FA Premier League was founded in February 1992 by the break away from the Football League of the top 20 clubs of the First Division. The underlying idea was to allow these clubs to negotiate their own media and television contracts, thus increasing their revenue. The Premiership has become the world’s most lucrative and most watched league, ranked ahead of Italy’s Serie A and the Spanish La Liga. In 16 seasons, only 4 teams have collected the Premiership title, with 2007-08 champions Manchester United the most successful, with 10 wins. Arsenal have been successful 3 times, Chelsea twice, with consecutive wins in the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, while Blackburn Rovers boast a single success, in 1994-95. You can get a Free £10 bet on the Premier League when you join Blue Square <endpulquote>

Winning the Premiership

The Premiership Title odds market is inevitably dominated by the “Big 4″ clubs, namely Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal. These teams are generally offered at short prices, with the remainder at odds of 3-figures and upwards. For example, with about one-third of the 2008-09 season played, Chelsea are ranked at odds-on, with Manchester United and Liverpool close behind in the win Premiership odds market. Arsenal, after a relatively slow start to the season, are considerably longer.

With so few viable contenders, there is little value to be found in the outright Premiership Title odds market, and bookmakers have to be inventive to generate punters’ interest in the win Premiership odds.

Win Premiership Odds w/o the Big 4

One of the Premiership Title odds bets that bookmakers have come up with is “Betting without the Big 4.” To collect on this bet, a punter must select a side that either finishes in the top 4 or finishes fifth behind the named clubs. Obviously, prices offered are far shorter than those in the outright win Premiership odds, though the chance of success is far greater without the top clubs. After a third of the 2008-09 season, Aston Villa trade at odds-on, followed by Manchester City, Everton and Tottenham.

Win Premiership Odds w/o Manchester United and Chelsea
Another Premiership bet is “Betting without Manchester United and Chelsea.” This bet is similar to the above, but to collect on this bet, a punter’s selection must either win the Premiership, finish second behind one of the named sides or third behind both the named sides. Currently, Bet365 and Blue Square offer this bet.

Prices on Liverpool and Arsenal generally represent little value, as they are the teams most likely to be involved in the “shake-up.” After a third of the 2008-09 season, Liverpool are long-odds on, with Arsenal next best. With the exception of Aston Villa, the remainder trade at 3-figure prices or longer. For punters fancying one of the lesser sides, there may be some value in this market, but prices generally reflect a side’s chances of finishing in thee top 3.

“Big 4″ Special Bets

Multiple Trophies
In order to stimulate punters’ interest in Premiership Title odds, several online layers (including Bet365 and Boylesports) offer special bets on the Big 4 clubs winning the Premiership along with one or more other trophies. Various permutations are offered, coupling win Premiership odds with the FA Cup, Carling Cup and Champions’ League.

PREMIERSHIP RELEGATION ODDS

The English Premiership operates a promotion and relegation system with the Football League Championship on a “3 up, 3 down” basis. The sides finishing in positions 18 to 20 in the Premier League are automatically relegated to the Championship. The promoted sides are the winners and runners-up in the Championship, along with the winners of the playoffs contested by the teams finishing in 3rd to 6th place in the Championship.

Relegation

Throughout the season, online layers offer Premiership relegation odds on all the Premier League sides. At the start of the season, the recently promoted sides invariably head the Premiership relegation betting market. Punters seeking a value Premiership relegation bet would do well to follow their own judgement rather than blindly backing the relegation favourites. For example, in the 2008-09 season, before a ball was kicked, Hull, Stoke and West Bromwich Albion were, by far, shortest in the Premiership relegation odds, with Hull and Stoke trading at odds-on. After 14 games, West Brom prop up the Premier League table, and are long odds-on favourites for the drop. The other two relegation places are currently filled by Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United, who were both available at double-figure prices in the pre-season Premiership relegation betting. Needless to say, bookmakers have been swift to slash their Premiership relegation odds to about ¼ of their opening offers. Stoke are a respectable 14th, but remain at odds-on in the relegation betting. Hull City have excelled in their first venture into the top-flight, currently occupying 6th position in the table. Their relegation odds have eased to substantial odds-against.

To Finish Bottom

Stan James and Boylesports offer a Premiership relegation bet on which team will finish the season in 20th place. In 2008-09, West Brom and Stoke are also short-priced favourites in this market, but some of the other well-fancied contenders for the Premiership “wooden spoon” are slightly surprising. Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United and Newcastle United all occupy positions in the first six in the Premiership relegation betting “to finish bottom.” Hull now trade at a healthy double-figure price in this market.

To Stay Up

Paddy Power and Boylesports have Premiership relegation odds for teams to avoid the drop to the Championship. However, there appears to be little value in this market, with the teams currently occupying positions in the bottom half of the table (with the exceptions of Stoke and West Brom) trading at varying degrees of odds-on. These teams are, almost by definition, inconsistent and taking a ridiculously short price about any of them remaining in the Premiership in 2009-10 should definitely be avoided.

Match Betting

Given the popularity of individual match betting with punters, the effect that a relegation “dogfight” can have on a team’s performance is worthy of mention. Late on in any season, teams at the forefront of the Premiership relegation betting will be fighting tooth and nail for survival in the top-flight. The realisation that every point is particularly precious can lead to some unexpectedly improved performances from such teams and some surprise results. Punters would do well to keep this point in mind when betting on late season matches.

PREMIERSHIP ODDS
Premiership betting has grown immensely in popularity with football punters in recent years. Premiership betting odds can add an extra dimension and increased enjoyment to the viewing of live games. Betting on individual matches has probably become the most popular form of betting with football punters.

Odds to win the Premier League

Clearly any bet on who will win the Premier League is going to be dominated by the “big four” (Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal), and nothing reflects this better than the odds of the fifth-best priced team (currently fourth placed Aston Villa, available at odds of 200/1, compared to Chelsea’s 3/4 or Manchester United at 10/3.

Premiership Relegation Odds

A popular market, which often throws up a few surprises, and normally remains a fairly open contest heading into the final game of the season, betting on premiership relegation can be very profitable. Odds remain extremely volatile – A few weeks ago, Spurs were bottom of the table and favourites for the drop. Enter Harry Redknapp, and they are now out of the drop zone, and shot up to 20/1 outside shots for relegation. despite Hull’s excellent start to their very first Premiership campaign, they remain only 9/2 for the drop, suggesting the bookies forsee their form dropping away. At the time of writing, the favourites for relegation were West Brom, Stoke and Bolton, closely followed by West Ham, Fulham and Blackburn Rovers.

Match Betting

“Traditional” match betting involved prices for 90 minutes play, with prices for home win, away win and draw. However, bookmakers have introduced other Premiership odds for betting on single matches. One of the most popular is the “Asian Handicap”, as described below.

Asian Handicaps
Asian Handicaps are a relatively new type of betting opportunity offered on football matches. Asian Handicaps appear complicated, but are quite easy to understand and can offer more interesting betting options to the football punter. An Asian Handicap is created which gives a roughly equal chance to both teams. This allows a very competitive market to be offered, even if in the game appears particularly one-sided.

Example

1.95 Man Utd (-0.5) v Arsenal (+0.5) 1.85

The figure alongside the team is the Premiership odds on offer in decimal form. The figure in brackets is the handicap. This means Manchester United are an imaginary ½ a goal behind at the start of the match. Manchester United punters need United to win, while Arsenal punters need Arsenal to win or the match to finish drawn.

In addition to Premiership odds on the outright result of a match, layers offer a vast range of other markets. These include markets involving goalscorers, total goals, shirt numbers, corners, booking and many others. It is recommended that punters investigate individual bookmakers’ sites to determine the complete range of markets and Premier League betting odds available.

Team’s Finishing Position

Given the dominance of the Premier League by the “Big 4″ sides, online layers offer prices on any team finishing in the top 2, top 3, top 4 and top 6 positions. There is little value in places 2 to 4 as the “Big 4″ dominance still applies. Premiership betting odds for a top 6 finish are generally an accurate reflection of a team’s chances and there seems little value in any of these markets.

Top Goalscorer

Throughout the season, online layers offer fluctuating Premier League odds on the player who will finish as the leading goalscorer. The top goalscorer Premiership odds market is inevitably dominated by strikers from the leading clubs. With about one third of the 2008-09 season played, Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo (8 goals) tops the market, with Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka (12) just behind. Liverpool’s Fernando Torres (7) and resurgent Spurs’ striker Darren Bent (7) are also prominent in the Premiership betting odds. Gabriel Agbonlahor, who recently made his England debut in a friendly against Germany, has scored 7 times for Aston Villa and may represent value at a massive price.

Top Regional Clubs

Several online layers offer Premiership betting odds for teams in a particular geographical area. For example:
Top London Club
Top Midlands Club
Top North East Club
Top North West Club

Such Premier League odds are popular with punters, as though prices are shorter than winning the Premiership, only a handful of teams are involved.

The market for the Premiership sack race is barely two weeks old, but bookies have already suspended the market for the next Premiership manager to lose their job as rumours circulate that Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan has quit the North-east club in a row with owner Mike Ashley over a lack of transfer funds, and decision to sell key players.

888sport, Bet365 and Blue Square were offering odds of up to 8/1 as recent as this morning on Keegan becoming the first managerial casualty of the Premiership season, but as soon as the story broke that Keegan had quit (there was also one version that he had been sacked), all bookies moved swiftly to remove the option to bet on the next premiership manager to vacate the gaffer’s chair.

The row between Keegan and Ashley appears to stem from the sale of James Milner to Aston Villa for £12m. Keegan was adamant that Milner would not be leaving Newcastle, and was incensed that the board would sell him against their manager’s wishes. The board also accepted a bid for Joey Barton on transfer deadline day yesterday, but Keegan persuaded him to stay.

What next for Keegan? Has he got another job in him? would he want (or need) the pressure? Or will he do one last hurrah as Doncaster boss?

PREMIERSHIP BETTING PREVIEW – AUGUST 30th / 31st

Chelsea, having made a 100% start to the 2008-09 season, have now replaced Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United as favourites for the Premiership title, at a best-priced Evens with Paddy Power. Arsenal, following an unexpected reverse at Fulham, are now out to 10/1 with Ladbrokes for Premiership success. It’s far too early to be making final decisions on the destination of the Premiership title, but title hopefuls cannot afford too many slip-ups this early in the season.

Saturday 30th August

Bolton Wanderers v West Bromwich Albion

Bolton (10/11 with William Hill) host West Brom (7/2 with bet365), with the draw 5/2 with bet365. The Trotters started the season well by with an impressive 3-1 home win over Stoke City and put up a good showing when losing, by a single goal, to Newcastle at St. James’ Park last Saturday. The Baggies, 2007-08 Championship winners, have lost at 1-0 Arsenal and 2-1 at home to Everton. Bolton has the advantage in recent encounters at the Reebok, the last ten corresponding fixtures resulting in 5 Bolton wins, 1 West Brom win and 4 draws. With things looking less than bright at the Hawthorns, Bolton can revert to winning ways.

Everton v Portsmouth

Everton (11/10 with William Hill) have had the best of recent Premiership home encounters with Portsmouth (3/1 with skybet) winning 4 of the last 5. Neither side has impressed thus far this season. The Toffees opened their 2008-09 campaign with a 3-2 home loss to Blackburn, followed by a 2-1 lacklustre victory over disappointing West Brom at the Hawthorns. Pompey have faced the worst possible start to the season, hosting Chelsea, followed by a visit to Old Trafford. 4-0 and 1-0 defeats came as no great surprise to anyone. Goalless so far, Portsmouth must start somewhere and they are taken to pick up their first points with an away win. The draw is a best-priced 12/5 with Boylesports.

Hull City v Wigan Athletic

Hull (6/4 with Paddy Power) has shown so far that they seek more than survival in the top-flight. Opening their campaign with a 2-1 home win against Fulham and an away 1-1 draw against Blackburn, the Tigers host Wigan Athletic (11/5 with skybet), with the draw a 9/4 chance with bet365. The Latics have lost 2-1 at West Ham and, unsurprisingly, 1-0 at home to Chelsea. The sides have not met in the league since a League Two encounter in November 1996, so there is no recent head-to-head form. However, coach Steve Bruce is ambitious and Wigan are taken to kick-start their season with an away win.

Middlesbrough v Stoke City

Middlesbrough (8/13 with Paddy Power) opened their 2008-09 campaign with a 2-1 home win against Tottenham (who continued their woeful away form). Their subsequent 2-1 loss at Anfield was predictable but the side has showed little determination thus far. Stoke (6/1 with bet365) find themselves in a similar position, overcoming an opening 3-1 loss at Bolton to win 3-2 at Villa Park. The sides have not met since a Championship fixture in February 1998, but Stoke look way too big at 6/1 and is taken to collect another 3 points at the Riverside. The draw is a best-priced 13/5 with Stan James.

West Ham v Blackburn Rovers

West Ham (7/5 with bet365) host Blackburn (21/10 with Paddy Power) in an interesting contest, with the draw a best-priced 12/5 with skybet. West Ham got the job done in the first week in beating Wigan 2-1. However, the Hammers were soundly walloped 3-0 at Manchester City last Sunday. Rovers beat Everton with a late goal in week one, but struggled to a 1-1 at Ewood Park with Hull last Saturday. With Roque Santa Cruz having signed his new contract, things seem a little more settled and Paul Ince will be hoping for more consistency from his charges. The Hammers have much the better head-to-head form having beaten Blackburn in 6 of their last 8 encounters (including all 4 at Upton Park) and the home win looks the value at 7/5.

Arsenal v Newcastle United

Arsenal (1/2 totesport) may have been missing key players in their start to the 2008-09 campaign, but their two performances to date have been unconvincing, to say the very least. A 1-0 home win over West Brom followed by a 1-0 reverse, after a dismal performance, at Craven Cottage is a particularly poor start for the Gunners. Newcastle (8/1 with bet365) opened their season with a 1-1 draw against an underperforming Manchester United at old Trafford, and a subsequent 1-0 home win over Bolton was hardly awe-inspiring. Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger hopes that the Fulham result will serve as a “wake-up call” for his team. If that is the case, Arsenal should despatch Newcastle with a minimum of fuss. In 19 Premiership visits to Arsenal, Newcastle have only won 3 times with 1 draw. Although a short price, Arsenal should get their season going with a comfortable home win.

Sunday 31st August

Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur

Chelsea (2/5 with William Hill) boast a 100% record in the opening to their 2008-09 campaign, following a 4-0 home drubbing of Portsmouth on the opening day of the season, followed by a predictable 1-0 win at Wigan. Contrastingly, Spurs (8/1 with skybet) “boast” a 0% record, continuing their pathetic away form with a 2-1 loss at Middlesborough, followed by a home defeat to Sunderland by the same margin. In 20 Premierships visits to Stamford Bridge, Spurs have never won, but have achieved 8 draws. As ever, early season fixtures have seen some surprises, and the draw, a best-priced 7/2 with Boylesports makes a certain appeal. However, assuming the Blues don’t “do an Arsenal”, despite the short price, the home win looks a formality.

Sunderland v Manchester City

If both sides continue in similar impressive fashion to their recent fixtures, this has all the makings of a classic encounter. Roy Keane’s Sunderland (13/10 Paddy Power) has a classy, determined squad, seen to best effect in a 2-1 away victory over Spurs, following a 1-0 home defeat by Liverpool. Manchester City (12/5 bet365) was also impressive in drubbing West Ham 3-0, after on opening 4-2 loss at Villa Park. The sides have met only four times at the Stadium of Light in Premier League fixtures, with City prevailing in 3 of these. While skybet’s offer of 12/5 the draw makes some appeal, Manchester City are taken to just shade a close contest.

Aston Villa v Liverpool

Aston Villa (12/5 with Boylesports) was impressive in the opening fixture, walloping Manchester City 4-2, courtesy of a hat-trick from young striker Gabby Agbonlahor. However, Stoke’s last-minute goal at the Britannia gave them a 3-2 victory over Villa, deflating the fans and highlighting some weak spots at the back. Liverpool (5/4 with skybet) is one of the only two teams with a 100% record, putting Sunderland to the sword at the Stadium of Light, followed by a predictable 2-1 home win over Middlesbrough. The Reds have not been seen at their best thus far, but Robbie Keane and Fernando Torres are beginning to gel into one of the Premiership’s most potent strike forces. Liverpool hold a massive advantage in recent encounters at Villa Park, being unbeaten in the last 10 corresponding Premiership fixtures with 6 wins and 4 draws (9/4 with Paddy Power). Although Villa will be smarting after their latest defeat to newly-promoted Stoke and seeking to get their season back on track, the Reds look good value at odds against for an away win.

PREMIERSHIP BETTING PREVIEW 23rd TO 25th AUGUST

Manchester United were favourites to win the Premier League before a ball was kicked, but now they are odds-on with William Hill not to hit the summit throughout the entire season. The firm are offering odds of 8-11 that Sir Alex Ferguson’s side never stand top of the table and evens that they do, although it will be difficult early on as their next three Premier League matches are all away, at Portsmouth, Chelsea and Liverpool. Meanwhile, newly-promoted Stoke City are 8-1 with Ladbrokes not to win a game this season after Tony Pulis’ side went down 3-1 at Bolton in their opening game of their inaugural Premiership season.

Saturday 23rd August

Blackburn Rovers v Hull City

Rovers (4/6 with Ladbrokes) host the Tigers in week two of the 2008-09 Premiership. Blackburn demonstrated their determination, a priceless quality, in beating Everton 3-2 in injury-time. Hull (11/2 bet365) made a more than satisfactory start in their first appearance in the Premier League. A goal down after 8 minutes, Brazilian Geovanni equalised with a precise curling shot 14 minutes later. 9 minutes from time, Caleb Folan sent the Hull fans crazy with the winner. Hull certainly won’t be relegation candidates if continuing in this vein. The draw at 27/10 with Boylesports seems the most sensible selection.

Liverpool v Middlesbrough

After Liverpool’s poor performance last Saturday against Sunderland it was muttered in certain quarters that the Reds were missing recently departed Peter Crouch. However, it is more likely that Liverpool (2/5 with 888sport) could have done with the services of Brazilian Lucas, Argentinean Javier Mascherano and Dutchman Babel who are serving their countries in the Olympic Games. However, Fernando Torres’ late strike gave the Reds a 1-0 win. Middlesbrough (9/1 with bet365) also needs to improve a great deal. Although they did get a great result against Spurs, the goal came late in the second half. A repeated attempt at Anfield may well result in defeat. Middlesbrough fans will want to see goals from Brazilian striker Afonso Alves, rather than salvation arriving off the bench via Mido. Middlesbrough have achieved only one point from their last 5 visits to Anfield (the draw is 7/2 with sportingbet) and the sequence looks likely to continue with another home win for the Reds.

Newcastle United v Bolton Wanderers

Newcastle (4/5 with bet365) boss Kevin Keegan is happy with the possibility of using Steven Taylor alongside Fabricio Coloccini in his defence for the home match against Bolton (4/1 with Paddy Power). Taylor was dismissed from the England U-21 camp with a minor ankle injury but should fully recover in time for Saturday’s match. The Magpies got a point at Old Trafford, without impressing. Bolton will arrive at St. James’ Park confident that they can get at least a point from this encounter. They put up a solid performance against Stoke, with Johan Elmander scoring on his debut. The draw is a best-priced 13/5 with Boylesports and is a tentative selection.

Stoke City v Aston Villa

Stoke (4/1 with skybet) had a harsh awakening in their first top-flight encounter for more than 20 years. The 3-1 defeat by Bolton showed Stoke something of what it will take to survive in the Premiership. They face a greater challenge this week in front of their own fans. Villa (4/5 with Paddy Power) was impressive in hammering Manchester City 4-2 in week one. Agbonlahor’s hat-trick will have fans expecting another impressive performance, which Villa can deliver. The draw is best-priced 13/5 with bet365. Looks a banker away win.

Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland

Tottenham (8/15 with Paddy Power) not only lost the opening match against Middlesbrough last Saturday, leaving their fans wondering if the pre-season heavy investment will pay off, but also saw the “Berbatov crisis” reach an unbearable level. The Hungarian international spent 65 minutes on the bench. When he was finally introduced, Wheater scored almost immediately and Mido sewed up the game for Boro in the 86th minute. Huth’s injury-time own goal was scant consolation. Sunderland lost 1-0 to Liverpool but forcing the Reds to play “route one” football, making Robbie Keane’s task a difficult one. Aside from Fernando Torres’ single 83rd minute Sunderland did a good job, and look a decent bet at skybet’s 7/1 to upset Spurs. Bet365 offer 3/1 the draw.

West Bromwich Albion v Everton

In the opening week of the 2008-2009 season, West Brom (2/1 with skybet) gave Arsenal a hard time, avoiding the expected hammering, though losing by a single goal. The Baggies play their first home match against Everton (6/4 with William Hill), hoping to play as hard, but to obtain a better result. Everton lost their first match of the season 3-2 to Blackburn Rovers. On balance, totesport’s offer of 9/4 about the draw looks the best bet.

Fulham v Arsenal

Fulham (11/2 with skybet) have collected just 3 points in 6 home Premiership encounters with Arsenal (8/13 Ladbrokes), beating the 10-man Gunners 2-1, at Craven Cottage, in November 2006. Otherwise, their record is 5 defeats, conceding 12 goals and scoring only 2.Neither team impressed in their opening fixture of the season. Arsenal at least won their home tie against West Brom, via a 4th minute goal from Samir Nasry, who may miss the Fulham tie with a thigh strain. Fulham lost their opening match to Premiership debutants Hull and things must improve for the team that finished in 17th place last. Korean forward Seol Ki-Hyeon is expecting that the goal he scored last week will earn him a position in the Cottagers starting line-up for the match against Arsenal. Andy Johnson missed Fulham’s 2-1 defeat at Hull last Saturday, and he is doubtful for Arsenal’s visit to Craven Cottage this Saturday. A thigh strain has laid the striker low since his £11m arrival from Everton and manager Roy Hodgson is unwilling to risk him. Arsenal looks good for an away win. The draw is 11/4 with skybet.

Sunday 24th August

Wigan Athletic v Chelsea

Given the way the Blues played against Portsmouth, this looks like a tie Wigan (15/2 with bet365) could do without so soon in the season. The Latics lost 2-1 at West Ham in the opening match and now face Scolari’s squad. Every piece of the Chelsea (4/9 with Paddy Power) line-up worked perfectly in the 4-0 defeat of Pompey. For Sunday’s match at Wigan, Scolari might not be able to count on Michael Ballack, due to a foot injury. The Latics have nothing to lose yet, but a convincing performance is the key to boost the team’s confidence for the rest of the season. The draw is 7/2 with bet365, but Chelsea should be comfortable winners.

Manchester City v West Ham United

Manchester City (13/10 with bet365) hosts West Ham (12/5 with skybet) at the City of Manchester Stadium. New Eastlands boss Mark Hughes knew it wouldn’t be easy to face Aston Villa at their home ground, but the 4-2 defeat was a harsh hit on his young team. City faces West Ham needing 3 points to kick off their season. There appears to be some sort of “hex” on 22-year-old Bulgaria striker Valeri Bojinov. In 2007-08, he injured his knee at the beginning of the season and didn’t play. Last Sunday, Bojinov was expected to be in the starting line-up at Villa Park but had to be carried off the pitch after rupturing an Achilles tendon during the pre-match warm-up. A brace from Dean Ashton saw the Hammers beat Wigan 2-1 in their opening game and skybet’s draw offer of 9/4 looks attractive.

Monday 25th August

Portsmouth v Manchester United

Portsmouth (5/1 with skybet) was poor in their season opener against Chelsea (lost 4-0) and will need to improve significantly. The Red Devils were lacklustre in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle last weekend, though were missing key players. Several United players are on international duty in midweek, but this should not stop them justifying bet365′s quote of 8/11 with a comfortable away win. The draw is 13/5 with skybet.
