Horse Racing Preview Friday May 16th 2008

RACING PREVIEW – 16th MAY – Aintree, Hamilton, Newbury, Newcastle, Newmarket, York

YORK

2:40 Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup, Group 2, 1m 6f

Rod Millman’s Sergeant Cecil has taken on almost legendary status in recent seasons. Won this last year (Geordieland 2nd) but poorer form since, including reappearance over 1m 4f. Still merits respect.

Aidan O’Brien’s Honolulu put up creditable efforts to be runner-up in the Ebor (here) and 3rd in the St Leger. Looked inexperienced on occasions, and likely to improve this term.

Michael Jarvis’ Royal And Regal (formerly with Andre Fabre) won a 1m 4f Newbury Group 3 on reappearance.
Also successful in last year’s 2m Jockey Club at Newmarket. Major fancy over ideal trip.

Betting Forecast: 15/8 Honolulu, 3/1 Royal And…

NEWBURY

2:10 Enter The Flat ToteTentoFollow Stakes, Listed Race, 1m 5f 61y

Saeed Bin Suroor’s Regal Flush (11/10) took the step up from handicap company to finish a close 4th in the St. Leger. Should continue of the upgrade, and looks the likely winner. Tranquil Tiger, Malt or Mash and Balkan Knight all contested the same event of their last start, the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes over 12f at Newmarket. Tranquil Tiger (11/4) stays further and a stronger gallop may have suited better. Malt or Mash (6/1) pulled very hard in the slow early stages, doing himself no favours. The versatile Balkan…

Horse Racing Preview May 15th – Folkestone, Ludlow, Newmarket, Perth, Salisbury and York

YORK

2:40 Totesport.com Dante Stakes, Group 2, 1m 2f 88y

Henry Cecil fields the unbeaten Twice Over, narrow winner of a competitive Group 3 Craven Stakes at Newmarket in April (1m). Never too far off the pace set by River Proud, he picked up the leader running down into the Dip, but was immediately challenged by Raven’s Pass, who went a good neck up. Looked beaten, but despite edging to his right, found plenty and just outstayed Raven’s Pass in a driving finish. Sired by Observatory, he is not certain to stay the Derby distance of 12f, so this race looks ideal.

Saeed Bin Suroor is doubly represented, by Young Pretender and McCartney. Young Pretender (the mount of Frankie Dettori) was a running on 5l 5th behind…

RACING PREVIEW – MAY 14th

YORK

York features the opening day of its 3-day “Dante” meeting, with at least one Group race one each day and some classy performers on parade.

2:40 Tattersall’s’ Musidora Stakes, Group 3, Fillies, 1m 2f 88y

Generally considered a traditional Oaks trial.

Lush Lashes, from Jim Bolger’ Irish yard was a 2l 6th in Newmarket’s 1000 Guineas. Ran green (only 3rd career start), outpaced at halfway, but made strong late headway, without threatening the principals. Must go well over the longer trip, on a course which seems likely to suit.

Moonstone, from Aidan O’Brien’s in-form Ballydoyle yard, made a promising debut in a 12f Leopardstown maiden. Held up, improved inside last 3f, staying on nicely under a…

BRIGHTON
2:40 Weatherbys Finance Handicap, Class 5, 5f 59y
Wynberg was unlucky not to complete his AW hat-trick outright at Lingfield as his rider only shoved him along hands and heels and he idled when going a neck up inside the last 100yds and was rejoined on the post. He had started to put the brakes on in his previous race when getting ahead but that was early enough to be rallied. Return to 5f, on fast ground, should suit as he has plenty of speed.
Magical Speedfit showed little enthusiasm in first-time blinkers at Yarmouth and they are…

REDCAR

4:20 Evening Gazette Fillies Handicap, Class 4, 7f

Passion Fruit wins in her turn and has well in better company. 6lb higher than when C&D winner last August but won on seasonal debut in 2005. Obvious chance. Chrystal Venture has raced exclusively over this trip prior to a run over 6f at Ripon (poor draw). Looked progressive when winning on AW, and seems reasonably weighted. Fantasy Parkes made a winning 2-y-o debut for Kevin Ryan, and was highly tried thereafter. Interesting on first start for Eric Alston.

Betting Forecast: 9/4 Passion Fruit, 4/1 Chrystal Venture, 5/1 Island Music, 6/1 Fantasy Parkes, Khazina, 10/1 Cassie´s Choice, Poppy´s Rose, 66/1 Dance In Style.

WOLVERHAMPTON

4:10 Name A Race to Enhance Your Brand Fillies’ Handicap, Class 5, 1m 141y

Reclamation had three runs as a 2yo to qualify for handicaps and has to be taken seriously. Outpaced at 1m in maiden company. Holds 1m 3f entry later in the week and may not have the pace for this on reappearance. John Gosden’s Queen´s Speech seems leniently weighted for her handicap debut. Not well drawn, but cannot be discounted, especially given her top stable. Ed Dunlop’s Pharaohs Queen has a stamina-laden pedigree, but has shown ability when placed in maidens from 7f to 10f. Handicap mark of 70 seems reasonable, and seems likely to be involved if pacey enough over this trip.

Betting Forecast: 7/2 Reclamation, 5/1 Pharaohs Queen, 13/2 Queen´s Speech, 8/1 Dream Sea, 10/1 Flower, Wogan´s Sister, 12/1 Double On Red, Italian Goddess, Star Grazer, 14/1 Ogre, Spiritofthetiger, 16/1 Sunshine Lady, 20/1 Inontime.…

UTTOXETER

4:30 Towergate Handicap ‘Chase, Class 4, 3m 2f

Potts Of Magic boasts some decent form in slightly better class, but has yet to win a ‘chase. Croc an Oir was pulled up after a bad blunder at Plumpton. Has been place in 15 of 23 ‘chase starts, but seems to be becoming difficult to win with. Kim Bailey’s Ya I Know is a point-to-point winner, but his form under Rules is poor and jumping needs to improve. History Master, a winning pointer, stayed on, but never looked like getting near the winner, in a hurdle at Worcester. Must be a major player if confidence has been restored.

Betting…

ASCOT

2:20 totesport Victoria Cup (Heritage Handicap), Class 2, 7f

A typically competitive, 25-runner renewal. Ed Dunlop’s Al Khaleej steps up in class after an impressive Kempton win on his seasonal bow. The opposition includes the progressive King of Dixie, Michael Jarvis’ We’ll Come and Barry Hills’ Zaahid. Jim Goldie saddles two, Dhaular Dhar and Middlemarch. It seems unlikely that the trip from Glasgow is just for a day out. David Barron also makes a long trip with Skhilling Spirit, who looks overpriced at 20/1.

Betting: 11/2 Al Khaleej, 6/1 We’ll Come (both Stan James), 9/1 King of Dixie (bet365), 12/1 Giganticus, Dabber’s Ridge, Presumptive, 14/1 Zaahid, 16/1 Laa Rayb (all Stan James), Fishforcompliments (totesport), 20/1 Skhilling Spirit (Stan James), 25/1 BAR.…
