US Open: Merion

June 13, 2013
Merion

Pennsylvania is not the first name that comes to mind when you think about American golf, but this weekend the top players in the game will hope for a spot of luck as they traverse the course at Merion. For the field, the god of good fortune has already made an appearance, soaking the course and (according to experts) taking a lot of the bite out in the process. Admittedly the rough still looks brutal, but the lightning greens are now soft and welcoming, and the fairways fairly sticky as the first day got underway on Thursday. Early in proceeding [...]

BMW PGA: Wentworth

For a while the sports of golf and tennis held an almost unique place in the overall pantheon, populated as they were by friendly and educated people who seemed above the sort of backbiting and underhanded rubbish you get in some of the coarser games, but the last couple of months have been anything but edifying for the old game of stickball. The debate over belly putters looks set to rumble onward with the news Adam Scott has joined a group planning a legal challenge to the new regulations, and then we had Sergio Garcia and everything that followed his [...]

Augusta: Fallout

AScott

I might be alone in this thought, but as a fan of rugby union and cricket I must admit that the concept of Australian athletes as ‘chokers’ seemed pretty absurd to me before the weekend, when the Masters Championship was decided in the rain and Adam Scott ended the long run of Australian failures at Augusta, the ultimate test of nerve in golf. There was a long list of also-rans from down under that was read out with monotonous regularity as the prospect of Scott taking the title became ever more real, and even ending that drought may not be [...]

Augusta: Underway

With most of the talk dominated by the somewhat ‘novelty’ subject of a young Chinese player making his debut at Augusta this week you’d think the Masters had turned into an invitational, but as the best golfers in the world line up on the opening tee they’ll be very aware of the daunting task ahead of them. Long fairways, sticky rough and some of the most maddeningly unreadable greens known to golf await the stars of the game over the next few days, and with tee-off just moments away a fair few pundits have made a surprising prediction for a [...]

Tiger, tiger, burning bright

March 26, 2013
Tiger

With Augusta coming up at the beginning of April the world of golf has a surprisingly nostalgic look to it, with Tiger Woods back on top of the pile having won three of his last five events, including a record eighth title at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The glory of the grand old course at Augusta is that it never changes that much, so players who have been there more than a couple of times know what to expect and how to prepare, and there is no man on the tour at present with a better history and level of [...]

WGC Match Play Championship

February 18, 2013

For the vast majority of the time golf is an individual battle between man and course, with the other players having little or no impact most of the time, but there are a few tournaments that choose to pit stars head-to-head, and the WGC Match Play Championship in Arizona is amongst the biggest and richest of those. Two British golfers in the final in the last two years has also raised the profile over here, with Luke Donald taking the 2011 title before Rory McIlroy lost out to American Hunter Mahan in the final last year and the draw for [...]
