Reality bites

Today was a fantastic day for Formula One writers, with drama and team orders to run the rule over judgment over, and it was the current superstar who saw his crown slip for the first time in a while, which only adds to the spice. When the cameras were on them in the little room they assemble in before the champagne celebrations Mark Webber kept his comments to a short reminder of the team orders he and Sebastian Vettel had both received pre-race, but you’d imagine the scenes in the private debrief for Red Bull would be fruity enough to [...]

F1: Malaysian GP

Last weekend the Australian GP in Melbourne provided enough headaches and logistical challenges for the race directors to be pulling their hair out, and I’m sure they’ll be hoping the occasionally volatile Malaysian weather doesn’t rain on their parade this Sunday, either actually or metaphorically. Kimi Raikkonen’s victory has put the cat amongst the 200mph pigeons to some extent, but it is worth remembering that last started with a sequence of something like eight different race winners, and there is a long way to go for everyone involved. One team with rather further to travel than the average are McLaren, [...]

F1: On to Malaysia

Now, it may just be the size of my chin or my lack of actual Formula One experience but I don’t know if I’ll be rushing out to back Kimi Raikkonen just yet for the World Championship title despite his rather awesome win in Melbourne on a weird weekend. Part of the reason for that is the fact his Lotus team may struggle to match the development pace the likes of Red Bull or Ferrari, but also down to the oddness that was so crucial in the Australian Grand Prix as a whole, and how it played out. With qualifying [...]

Melbourne GP: Preview

The opening weekend of the Championship can always be an eventful time in Formula One, but I doubt the likes of Bernie Ecclestone and Charlie Whiting were expecting trouble so soon. A wet qualifying sessions ended up being abandoned as half of the Tasman sea was dropped from the heavens onto the Melbourne Park raceway, and I’m willing to guess there will be a fair few people just glad we had no major accidents in what were undoubtedly dangerous conditions, although more than one driver found themselves in bother before the end came. As a result qualifying will now be [...]

F1 2013: Time to race

March 13, 2013

We’re now just a few days away from the beginning of the 2013 Formula One World Championship and the traditional curtain-raiser in Melbourne, and things are looking pretty good after the pre-season. While it can be difficult to truly gauge the progress of any team, and in particular Red Bull until you see them run in qualifying, there looked to be a good mix of teams capable of banging in a strong lap time, as well as some excellent competition in time-terms between many team-mates, I particular those at Mercedes. Admittedly there is still a chance of Sebastian Vettel pulling [...]

F1: Cutting back

The economics of sport are constantly changing, normally in line with the wider trends, and while some enclaves of insanity still remain in West London, Manchester or certain parts of Russia even football has seen a slowdown, but there is one sport that is traditionally the preserve of the super-rich that has really begun to feel the pinch. Formula One has been a cash-rich world for a long time, but right now teams are dropping out and the signs are not good in the long term with development of new contenders in mind. With the exception of Red Bull, a [...]
