By William Taylor – A sports writer for Formula1Fancast – A place for Formula 1 Blogs, News and Videos! Follow us on Twitter!

Lewis Hamilton can learn a lot from his team mate, Jenson Button, according three-time World Champion, Niki Lauda.

The Austrian former Formula 1 driver believes that the McLaren ace has all the necessary talent to win the championship again, but he could do with adopting a more cautious driving style.

Hamilton is very much considered the number one driver in his team, but this season Button has often out-performed him.

During the last race in Belgium, there was the all too familiar site of Hamilton crashing out, leaving Button to carry the hopes of the team.

And Lauda, who himself suffered one of the most horrific crashes in the sport’s history says it is time Hamilton took note of Button’s driving style.

“Lewis out-qualifies Jenson and is the quicker driver, but in Belgium it was Jenson who finished third while Hamilton crashed out again,” Lauda told the Sunday Express.

“You can’t win championships if you are crashing. Look at Sebastian Vettel, he is not making any mistakes or crashing, and that is why he is going to win the title again this year.

“Just look at Jenson and Lewis. They have the same car but it is Button who is leading him in the championship. That is because he is getting the car home and scoring points.”

Lauda believes Hamilton has the ability to be challenging Sebastian Vettel at the top of the leader board, but has no one to blame but himself for why he is not there this year.

“It is very frustrating because Lewis is one of the top three best drivers in F1. There is no question about that. But he is overdoing it.

“He just needs to come back a fraction as it is all very simple. If you’re not scoring points, then you’re not going to win championships.”

The drivers head to Italy this weekend for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, with Vettel 113 points ahead of Hamilton, who is languishing in fifth place.

With Formula One fans across the world gearing up for the next Grand Prix race this weekend, with the action heading over to Barcelona for the Spanish race, F1 punters may well be seeking the best value bets in the build-up to Sunday. When it comes to the likely winner, some people are unable to look past the obvious choice of Sebastian Vettel, but that pick is based solely on his dominance to date this season, rather than looking back at the previous stats applicable to this particular Grand Prix.

Should you choose to look at these stats when thinking about your F1 bets this weekend, you may well end up reflecting on the fact that Ferrari hold the record for highest number of wins recorded at the Spanish Grand Prix, with a total of 215 races won compared to Red Bull’s modest 18. Among those drivers currently in action on the Formula One circuit, Michael Schumacher unsurprisingly has won the most previous Spanish Grand Prix races, but one man who isn’t far behind him is Fernando Alonso, who does of course race for Ferrari.

With the last driver to win six pole positions in a row Schumacher over ten years ago, Vettel will also have to equal that impressive record if he wishes to put himself in with the best chance of winning this weekend’s race in Spain. With the majority of races over the last decade or so in the country won by those who win pole, it seems likely that Vettel will need to reach record-levelling form if he does wish to move one more massive step towards the championship this year.

Those who enjoy a little bit of unpredictability in their sport will, however, hope that an outsider like Alonso or perhaps even Lewis Hamilton can edge out in front when it matters this time around and make the air of inevitability hanging over this season a little less intense.

Jenson Button has admitted that all the drivers in Formula One are learning to deal with how the sport has changed this season, with the new rules, regulations and toys all introduced this year. The changes were implemented to make overtaking more common and therefore increase the excitement in the sport. The biggest change made has been with the Pirelli tyres that have been introduced, the rapidly-degrading tyres forcing teams to rethink their game plans and strategies.

McLaren driver Button has had a decent start to the new campaign, with his second place in Malaysia the highlight so far. Despite his encouraging opening three races, 2009 world champion Button has said he expects all the teams to still be working out which plan works for them as the drivers get accustomed to the new changes and anyone looking at the F1 2011 odds should bear this in mind.

He said: “I think all the teams are learning about this new style of racing in 2011. I think it’ll get more straightforward as we start to see more of a convergence of strategies and ideas over the next couple of races.

“Obviously, it’s the tyres that everyone needs to get a better handle on.”

With Button’s McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton coming off the back of his victory in Shanghai, the former Braun driver knows now that his car can fully challenge the Red Bull team. McLaren will now head to Istanbul looking to make back-to-back victories and Button will be desperate to pick up his first win of the new season.

Nico Rosberg was left rueing mistakes made by his team after problems with low fuel scuppered Mercedes chances of a podium finish at the Chinese Grand Prix at the weekend. The German started in fourth but managed to work his way to the front of the pack, leading for 14 laps before a lack of fuel meant Lewis Hamilton, Mark Webber and Jenson Button all passed by in the final few laps.

Rosberg was decidedly miffed after leading the race for such a long time only to finish outside the top-three. Anyone who had backed him in the F1 betting odds would have been annoyed.

“Leading the race for such a long time was a great feeling. But we had fuel consumption issues which made it really difficult. It was horrible, really horrible,” he said.

Despite the disappointment regarding Rosberg’s fuel issues it was a good all-round day for the Mercedes team. Michael Schumacher finished eighth after managing to overturn his surprise 14th place on the grid. The ten times world champion put in an impressive drive to finish among the points and round off a decent weekend for the Mercedes team.

With the car looking to be in extremely good shape the Mercedes team will now have two weeks before the Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul, to make sure they aren’t caught short again with fuel based problems. Despite both drivers finishing among the points, Schumacher and Rosberg will both have plenty of motivation when they line up on the grid in Turkey.

Jenson Button’s second place finish at last weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix has given the driver the belief that he can once again challenge for the world-title this season. Button finished behind Sebastian Vettel, who picked up back-to-back victories for Red Bull, but the Brit has seen enough from the opening two races of the season to believe he could reclaim his 2009 title.

Speaking after his “very important” podium finish alongside Vettel and Renault’s Nick Heidfeld, Button maintained his optimism of challenging come the end of the season, although those looking to place F1 bets might disagree.

“It gives me confidence. The feeling of the car is good and that is important to me. We can’t let the Red Bulls have it all their own way for much longer,” Button said.

The result leaves Button 24 points behind runaway leader Vettel but Button believes he has enough to claw back the German over the space of the rest of the season.

“At this moment in time, Sebastian is the person to beat. He has a 24-point lead and that is a lot from two races but there are still 17 to go,” he added.

The 2009 champion handled what was an eventful race extremely well to make up for a rough start to the race. Button was slow out of the blocks with Fernando Alonso overtaking him before the first turn. The Englishman recovered well though and once back behind Vettel, Button took no risks to earn his first podium of the season. The McLaren driver will now be desperate to build on this result as the team heads to Shanghai for this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix.

The Singapore Grand Prix takes place on Sunday 27th September, and Sky Bet is the only stop you need to make for Singapore Grand Prix Odds and F1 odds covering many markets.

In current F1 betting odds, Jenson Button is 10/11 favourite to lift the driver’s championship. Last year’s winner, Lewis Hamilton, is a distant 25/1 following a turbulent start to his campaign. Mark Webber is 9/4 and Sebastian Vettel is 11/4. Singapore Grand Prix Odds are 25/1 that the Championship will be decided in Singapore, but the favourites are Brazil and Abu Dhabi (both 10/11).

In F1 Constructors Championship betting, Red Bull are 2/5 favourites to win, with Brawn GP (7/4) fading after a dream start to their first season on the grid.

This year’s Singapore Grand Prix promises to be a highlight of the F1 calendar. Last year was the first time Singapore had staged a Grand Prix, and their debut race, a night race, was deemed a roaring financial success – with revenues from tourism beating projections by £30m.

All drivers on the grid will be looking to finish on the podium at Singapore, and at Sky Bet you can bet on how many podium finishes each driver will finish with at the end of the season. These F1 betting odds have Button at 5/6 to finish with either more than or less than 9.5.

Sky Bet offers all bettors on F1 and the Singapore Grand Prix a free £10 matched bet for new customers, so rev your engines and sign up now!

BRAZIL GRAND PRIX BETTING – 2nd November
Following a 3rd place in Singapore and a disappointing 12th place, from pole position in Japan, Lewis Hamilton would have undoubtedly been delighted by his (and his car’s) performance in China. Hamilton put up imperious performances, both in qualifying and the race itself. From pole position, he “made all” in the race, triumphing by 15 seconds from Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, whose team-mate Kimi Raikkonen was just behind in third. Hamilton is now a best-priced 1/5 with sportingbet to collect the drivers’ title.

TV Coverage

The Brazilian Grand Prix will be televised live on ITV1 and Setanta Ireland.

Interlagos

The Brazilian Grand Prix takes place at the Autodromo José Carlos Pace in Interlagos, a district of Sao Paulo, which has hosted the Grand Prix since 1990. Its somewhat elderly facilities do not compare well with most other circuits in the calendar, but the Interlagos circuit has produced some of the most exciting, memorable races in recent history. It remains one of the most challenging and exciting circuits. The most successful drivers have been Alain Prost, with 6 victories between 1982 and 1990, and Michael Schumacher, with 4 successes between 1994 and 2002. From a constructors’ perspective, McLaren have amassed 11 victories between 1974 and 2005, while Ferrari boast 9 successes since 1976, including the 2006 and 2007 renewals. 2008 will be the fourth consecutive year that the Drivers’ Championship has been decided at Interlagos. In 2006, Felipe Massa became the last “home” winner.

Drivers’ Championship

Lewis Hamilton’s 10-point haul in China has seen him shorten to 1/5 with sportingbet. The only other possible winner, Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, is now 5/1 with William Hill.

Constructors’ Championship

Ferrari amassed 14 championship points with a 2-3 in China, and have shortened to 1/14 with totesport. Their total of 156 points gives them an 11-point lead over McLaren, a best-priced 9/1 with Stan James.

Leading Contenders for Brazil

Lewis Hamilton
Hamilton (9/4 with vcbet for Brazil) won the Chinese Grand Prix with a victory that was described by McLaren boss Ron Dennis as “faultless”. The Briton heads for Felipe Massa’s “home” race with a 7-point lead and one hand on the championship trophy. However, Hamilton and his team are taking nothing for granted, having surrendered an identical lead to Kimi Raikkonen last year. Lewis Hamilton requires only a fifth place to be certain of winning his maiden drivers’ title. However, McLaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh, while admitting that a conservative approach could be adopted to Hamilton’s race, has not given up hope of collecting the constructors’ title as well. However, McLaren would almost certainly need a one-two finish. Whitmarsh pointed out that there are several aerodynamic upgrades under evaluation for Brazil. Heikki Kovalainen (25/1 with Boylesports), who failed to finish in China, will have a fresh engine for the season finale.

Felipe Massa
Ferrari’s Stefano Domenicali admitted he had no explanation as to why Felipe Massa (6/4 with skybet)
and Kimi Raikkonen (6/1 with sportingbet) were unable to live with the speed of Lewis Hamilton in the Chinese Grand Prix. He knows Ferrari must find the answers, and quickly, if Massa is to have any chance of stealing the drivers’ crown from Hamilton in Interlagos. However, he believes the McLaren is not fundamentally faster and that a careful analysis is required to gain an understanding of the Ferraris’ sub-par performances. Shanghai was the first race since the German Grand Prix in which the fastest lap was not set by a Ferrari.

Robert Kubica
Kubica, 6th in China, is a 28/1 chance with Stan James for success in Brazil. Despite putting paid to his drivers’ title chances, being some 19 points behind leader Hamilton has enjoyed an excellent season. The BMW Sauber driver, with a win in Canada and 6 further podium finishes has only finished out of the points on 3 occasions in seventeen races. While the attention will undoubtedly be given to Hamilton and Massa at Interlagos, Kubica will be seeking to secure third place in the Drivers’ Championship and cannot be ruled out as a potential winner.

JAPANESE GRAND PRIX BETTING
Briton Lewis Hamilton has shortened to 1/3 favourite, with Paddy Power, for the 2008 Drivers’ Championship, following a third-place finish in Singapore. Formula One returns to the revamped Fuji International Speedway for the 16th of 18 races that will decide the 2008 World Championship. The Fuji racetrack requires a certain amount of compromise in the way in which the cars are set up, balancing the need for minimal drag on the long straight against the downforce required for the tight sections of the track, with several first or second-gear corners, many with an unusually late apex. The numerous directional and camber changes around the circuit provide a stern test, and the car which behaves in the most predictable manner will be quickest. The last 11 runnings of the event (until 2007 held at the Suzuka circuit) has been dominated by Ferrari and McLaren, with Fernando Alonso’s 2006 victory in 2006 the only race won by another team. Ferrari have won 6 (including 5 wins for Michael Schumacher) and McLaren 4, including 2 wins for Mika Hakkinen and ironically, a 2005 win for Kimi Raikkonen (now with Ferrari).

Drivers’ Championship

With both Ferrari drivers failing to score at Singapore, the Drivers’ Championship is now surely just a two-horse race. McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton 6 points for third place give him a 7-point advantage over Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, with only the Grands Prix of Japan, China and Brazil remaining. Massa has been eased to 5/2 with William Hill, while the other pursuers are surely too far behind to trouble the leading duo. BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica (64 points) and Nick Heidfeld (56 points) rank as 100/1 and 250/1 chances with Ladbrokes. Massa’s team-mate Kimi Raikkonen must have no chance of regaining his 2007 crown and rates a 150/1 chance with the same firm.

Constructors’ Championship

Despite picking up no points in Singapore, Ferrari (134 points) are still odds-on favourites (5/6 with William Hill) to collect the Constructors’ Championship. McLaren (135 points) now lead the title race, but can still be backed at 5/4 with totesport. BMW Sauber are 50/1 with the same firm.

Leading Contenders for Japan

Lewis Hamilton
McLaren will have fond memories of the Fuji track, where Hamilton won the first Grand Prix to be held at the track for over 30 years. Hamilton is favourite for a repeat performance, at a best-priced 7/4 with Stan James.
However, Hamilton is mindful of the fact that he led the title race by 12 points after Japan in 2007, but collected only 2 further points, allowing Kimi Raikkonen to “steal” the title. He believes he has learnt from his mistakes and is a more mature driver as he seeks to move closer to securing the Championship.

Felipe Massa
Felipe Massa (2/1 with William Hill for success in Japan) insists he will push Lewis Hamilton all the way in the battle for the World Drivers’ Championship. The Brazilian is adamant that he is over the disappointment of Singapore and ready to resume the title fight on the Fuji circuit. After the debacle in Singapore, Ferrari have reverted to the hand-held “lollipop” pit-stop system for Japan.

Kimi Raikkonen
Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, 11/2 with vcbet for success in Japan, may have blown his own chances of the Drivers’ Championship, but may still have a large part to play in its outcome. Despite not scoring for over two months, he certainly has the car to take points off Hamilton in the remaining races.

Unpredictable weather conditions may play a large part in deciding the outcome of the Japanese race, and hence the World Championship. Ferrari’s performance has been marginally better than McLaren’s in the dry conditions in Hungary, Spain, Belgium and Singapore. Massa was fastest in Hungary and Spain, while Raikkonen must surely have won the Belgian GP but for the late downpour. In the latest Grand Prix in Singapore, the Ferrari duo seemed set for a 1-2, before the safety car triggered what team supremo Luca Montezemolo described as a “circus.”

F1 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX BETTING

Lewis Hamilton remains the 4/6 favourite for the 2008 Drivers’ Championship, despite rival Felipe Massa (6/4 with Boylesports) closing the gap to a single point in the Italian Grand Prix.

Monza Review

Sebastian Vettel scored a victory for F1′s “other” Italian team at Monza. Vettel’s hard-fought victory, at 21 years and 74 days, meant he became the youngest ever F1 Grand Prix winner. With a drive that belied his tender years, Vettel kept a cool head to deny the (allegedly) superior McLaren of Heikki Kovalainen, recording his maiden Grand Prix win, also the first for his Toro Rosso team.

Drivers’ Championship

Ferrari’s Felipe Massa (77 points) closed the gap to just one point by finishing 6th, a place in front of leader Lewis Hamilton (78 points), at Monza. BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica gained 6 points in finishing 3rd and has shortened to 66/1 with skybet, having moved to within 14 points of Hamilton in the title race. Kimi Raikkonen remains on 57 points, having finished 9th at Monza and rates a 25/1 chance with Paddy Power. Hamilton’s McLaren team-mate Heikki Kovalainen picked up 8 points for finishing second, advancing his total to 51 points for the season. He rates a 150/1 chance for the title with Boylesports, while Ladbrokes offer Nick Heidfeld (53 points) at the same price, following his 5th place.

Constructors’ Championship

With both drivers finishing in the points in Italy, McLaren (129 points) have reduced the gap to leaders Ferrari (134 points) from 12 points to 5, following the Italian Grand Prix. They have also widened the gap to third-placed BMW Sauber (117 points) from 6 points to 12. With just four races remaining, Ferrari have been eased to 4/6 with William Hill (from 2/5), while McLaren have shortened to 11/8 with Paddy Power (from 2/1).As the only other viable contenders, BMW Sauber have shortened to 40/1 with skybet (from 50/1) for the Constructors’ title.

Leading Contenders in Singapore

Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton emerged from a difficult Italian Grand Prix with his Drivers’ Championship lead reduced but intact. He has now led the title race since winning the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in July. Hamilton and his engineers contrived to make a poor tyre choice for qualifying, resulting in a career-low 15th place on the grid. Carrying a heavy fuel load and on a one-stop strategy, the Briton drove a cracking first half of the race. At the time of his pit stop, Hamilton had manoeuvred his McLaren into second place. However, his good work was undone by the poor judgement of the weather conditions by his team, forcing a second stop. He eventually finished seventh, one place in arrears of Championship rival Felipe Massa. Hamilton conceded that the race became an exercise in damage limitation and that he was relieved to still lead the title race, albeit by just one point. He is greatly looking forward to F1′s night debut in Singapore and exudes confidence in his team’s ability to provide a Championship-winning car. He said, “Singapore is going to be a great experience. I’ve never been to the city before, and I love the fact we’re going back to a street circuit. Fantastic.” Hamilton is 5/2 with sportingbet for success in Singapore.

Felipe Massa
On Friday, at Italy’s Mugello International Circuit, Felipe Massa’s got behind the wheel of the F2008. In a day affected by adverse weather conditions, the Brazilian driver worked on set-up for both a wet and a dry track. Massa completed a total of 98 laps, the quickest in a time of 1m 23.618s. “This session has been very useful. I encountered wet conditions and, given that there’s a chance we could experience these conditions in the coming races, that is no bad thing. We have done a good job and feel ready for the forthcoming Singapore Grand Prix. The end of the championship will be very close and it will be vital not to make any mistakes anywhere.” Massa is 5/2 with William Hill for victory in Singapore.

Robert Kubica
Kubica (16/1 with Boylesports) is looking forward to Singapore, the Grand Prix being the second new race of the season. He stated that he enjoys racing on new tracks and is excited at the prospect. Furthermore, he said that he is a great fan of street circuits and is not fazed by the night start. “I am sure the FIA have done everything to make it a safe race,” he said.

Kimi Raikkonen
Kimi Raikkonen concedes he now virtually no chance of retaining his Formula One Drivers’ title.
With only four Grands Prix remaining, Raikkonen currently trails McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton by 21 points,
a gap that could stretch to 27 if McLaren win their appeal against the penalty imposed at the Belgian Grand Prix. The Finn has had a lean time, winless for ten races and failing to score in the last three. He is 9/2 with Boylesports to get back on the winning trail in Singapore.

Heikki Kovalainen
McLaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh believes Heikki Kovalainen has no reason to be ashamed of his performance at the Italian Grand Prix. The Finn only managed second place on the grid behind Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel at Monza and then had to watch him lead from start to finish. Whitmarsh insists that McLaren are more than happy with the Kovalainen’s showing in Italy. “Heikki has no reason to feel disappointed. He didn’t put a foot wrong all weekend and looked blindingly fast in dry, damp and full-wet conditions. Fuel-corrected, he would have been on pole position comfortably,” the CEO said. Kovalainen is 10/1 with Boylesports to go one better in Singapore.
