Chris Woakes raring to go

England seamer Chris Woakes has spoken about how keen he is to get back into action after recovering from the injury which cut short his tour of India earlier this year.

Before the One Day International series began, those looking at in play betting note how Woakes suffered a muscle tear and ended up flying home before being able to make an impact in England colours.

He is now fit and fresh again though and ready for 2012 to be a big year for him. He may well have been left out of the most recent England test squad, but he is ambitious and wants to get back involved as soon as possible.

Referring to his injury and the next step for him as a player, Woakes said: “I just got a grade one muscle tear which was not serious but meant 10-14 days out and as it was such a short tour that was that.”

“It was probably an injury waiting to happen after all that bowling throughout the previous year and winter before. It caught up with me.”

“I did think I would be getting a break but when the England selectors come calling you can’t turn it down, can you? I was excited to go because India is a great place to play cricket but, after playing in both warm-up games in Hyderabad without a problem, in the training session before the first one-dayer I picked up an annoying niggle.”

“But getting home and having a break has given me that hunger back. I was back in training last week and am looking forward to getting back to work at Edgbaston after Christmas.”

“I am not in the Test team but might go somewhere with the Lions or the Performance Programme.”

Woakes also confirmed about how close he is to signing a new contract with Warwickshire, outlining his intention to remain at the Country for many years to come.

He said: “I am a Warwickshire boy and I want us to win something next year. We want to go one better in the Championship and put things right in the one-day stuff where we have got a few new ideas and are keen to put them into practice.”

Elsewhere, Woakes has been left out of the England Lions squad, with James Taylor picked as the captain for the 16-man squad that tour Bangladesh in January.

ECB performance director David Parsons said: “We have selected a young squad for this tour.”

“This is in line with our strategy of looking ahead to the 2015 World Cup.”

“The squad spent the first part of the winter training at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough.”

“We are identifying and working with players who may be able to go on and play a role for England in the future.”

“These players have worked extremely hard over the last couple of months with a strong focus on limited-overs cricket.

“This tour presents a good opportunity for these players to continue to develop their skills in subcontinent conditions on what will no doubt be a challenging tour of Bangladesh, as well as push for selection for future England squads.”

Praveen Kumar – 8 – Paid the price for a heavy workload by missing the fourth Test, a sign of how much India over-relied on the only man to trouble England’s batsmen. 15 wickets at 29.53 was an excellent return and a firm rebuttal to those who believe – Duncan Fletcher? – that he lacks the pace to prosper as a Test bowler. Harbhajan Singh – 1 – Two wickets from more than 69 overs of toil neatly represented his current malaise – or is it a terminal decline? Lacks confidence in variations and, if his swashbuckling batting when supposedly injured with a side strain is anything to go by, some guts to tough it out with the ball. RP Singh – 1 – Slow and something of a liability, and that was just in the field. Out of practice and out of his depth after being parachuted in for the fourth Test, he embodied the shambolic planning of the management. Munaf Patel has enhanced his career by being drinks waiter.

A champion performance from Leicestershire’s James Taylor has handed the England Lions victory in their third tour match against Sir Lanka A, today. The result is especially important for the Lions, given that the side were trounced in their previous match with Sri Lanka A, at the weekend, losing by a 10-wicket margin.

The Lions began the one-day international series with a huge win over the visitors, at the end of last week. The youngster, Taylor, scored his first century as England captain in the game, from just under 120 balls. The Lions eventually put 310 up the Sri Lankans, with Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow contributing a half-ton each.

However, overconfidence, complacency, or just plain bad luck saw the Lions sink to a humiliating defeat in the second match at New Road, Worchester. Sri Lankan bowler, Seekkuge Prasanna, overwhelmed the England batsmen with a career-defining performance. The Lions lost five wickets in ten overs, before succumbing to defeat with 196 balls left to play. Those following the cricket betting tips would have been surprised by the size of the defeat.

Despite being soundly beaten, Lions all-rounder, Chris Woakes, was convinced that the squad could ‘turn the tide’ in the final match, and claim the tour series for the home team. Durham seamer Graham Onions has been called up to the England squad for the 4th test against India after Chris Tremlett was ruled out of the game having failed to recover from a back injury and Jimmy Anderson was diagnosed with a minor thigh strain.

Tremlett has been unable to take part in either of the last two test matches as England claimed a series win as well as the number one spot in the test rankings following victory at Edgbaston that moved the home side into an unassailable 3-0 series lead.

Anderson meanwhile complained of tightness in his thigh during the 3rd test at Edgbaston and is considered a doubt for the game at the Oval, although the injury will be monitored over the coming days.

Onions hasn’t played for England since the Cape Town test match against South Africa in January last year, before a bad run of injuries allowed the likes of Tim Bresnan and Steve Finn to move ahead of him in the pecking order, but the Durham bowler grabbed the attention of the selectors by picking up three wickets for the England Lions against Sri Lanka A earlier this month.

Finn is also in the squad and could be in contention for a call up should England decide not to risk Anderson with a T20 match against India being preceded by five ODI’s once the test series is complete.

“Unfortunately Chris Tremlett has failed a fitness test and won’t be available for selection for the fourth Test, despite showing strong signs of recovery over the past few days.” national selector Geoff Miller said.

“Chris’s absence in conjunction with what appears to be a minor injury concern with Jimmy Anderson has led to a call up for Graham Onions as precautionary bowling cover.”

“We are hopeful that Jimmy will overcome this niggle by Thursday but more time is required before a decision on his availability can be made conclusively.

“Steven Finn is obviously in the squad and he is now joined by Graham Onions who has been in good form for Durham since returning from a back injury at the start of the season.” He added.

Sussex Sharks have flattened their opponents, the Worcestershire Royals, in Group A of the Clydesdale Bank 40 (CB40).

The match, which was played at Horsham in Sussex on Sunday, saw the home side score 399 runs, the highest tally ever recorded in domestic limited overs cricket. Also on the score sheet, was 22-year-old, Ben Brown, with 27 from 14, and Murray Goodwin, with 38 runs. Goodwin’s modest total is an improvement over his performance in Sussex’s Twenty20 match against Lancashire, last week, when he scored 10 runs. New Zealander, and team newcomer, Lou Vincent, hit 71 runs from 43 deliveries for Sussex. Pundits like Michael Vaughan expect Sussex to do very well.

Elsewhere in the CB40, Derbyshire Falcons defeated local rivals, Yorkshire Carnegie, despite the efforts of former Falcon, Gary Ballance. Ballance smacked ten fours from 65 balls against his old club, but Carnegie ultimately lost by six wickets.

Durham Dynamos beat Leicestershire Foxes, in a match described by the Northern Echo newspaper as a “shambles”. The Dynamos’ Mark Stoneman is alleged to have been the only oiled gear in Durham’s cricket machine. He scored his first-ever half-ton in limited overs cricket.

England have announced two new captains with Andrew Strauss making way for Alastair Cook to become one-day international skipper and Stuart Broad leading the Twenty20 team at the expense of Paul Collingwood.

England have decided to adopt a three-way captaincy which is something that has never happened in international cricket before and starts a new exciting era as all three teams look to become number one in the world.

Strauss, who has played 125 one-day internationals, decided to step down as 50-over leader to concentrate on Test match duties with Cook leading the limited overs England side into a new era.

The Nottinghamshire bowler will have big shoes to fill after Collingwood captained England to World T20 glory in the Caribbean in 2010.

Broad’s temperamental issues in the past mean he was an outsider with sports bets, but managed to beat off competition from former captain Kevin Pietersen as England look for a more youthful approach to the future.

Doubts will remain over whether a bowler will succeed at captaining a side but the management have chosen Broad for the T20 to ease him in with a view to becoming one-day captain when Cook relives Strauss as Test match leader.

The fact Broad has had a very injury prone 12 months also casts doubts over his appointment as England look to continue their progress in Twenty over cricket.

Flower has suggested the three-way option is a risk but with all three captains established members of the England set-up and world-class performers, the Three Lions look to be in safe hands.
