Chelsea v Liverpool Champions League semi final preview Wednesday 30th April 2008

April 30, 2008

Chelsea v Liverpool, Champions League Semi-Final, second leg (1-1 from First leg), 19:45 kick-off at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea host Liverpool in the second leg of their semi-final showdown at Stamford Bridge looking for the chance to meet Manchester United in the Final in Moscow on May 21st, guaranteeing an English winner of the trophy this year. Chelsea will feel they have the advantage going into this game after John Arne-Riise’s late, late own-goal at Anfield last week handed Chelsea a lifeline to bring into the home leg of the tie - Remember, this is a Chelsea side that has not lost a game at home for more than four years.

Frank Lampard should return for Chelsea after missing the win over Manchester United that kept Chelsea in the Premiership title race due to the death of his mother, whilst all the hype pre-match has been surrounding Didier Drogba, who Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez branded a diver this week, amid claims he had compiled a dossier of the Chelsea striker’s dives. Drogba and his manager Avram Grant have strenuously denied these claims, and counter-claimed that if Liverpool wanted Drogba to stay on his feet, then they should stop kicking him.

Liverpool v Chelsea betting preview

April 22, 2008

Liverpool v Chelsea, Champions League semi-final, first leg. Anfield, 19:45 kickoff.

Liverpool meet Chelsea in the Champions League for the fourth season in a row, and if previous meetings are anything to go by, don’t expect a goal-fest: The previous six legs have produced a grand total of three goals. Liverpool are the only English Club to have knocked Avram Grant’s side out of Europe - not only that, but they’ve done it twice too, in the previous two times these sides met in the semi-finals.

Match Odds:

This is the fourth time that Chelsea have reached the semi-final stage of the Champions League, and they will be hoping for better luck than the previous three encounters, when they exited the competition each time. Liverpool by contrast have progressed all the way to the final seven times, and were triumphant there on no less than five occasions. Chelsea are currently 3/1 second-favourites to win the Champions League (Ladbrokes), whilst Liverpool are only marginally behind them on 10/3 (Totesport, William Hill, Bet 365 and others).

Fenerbahce v Chelsea Betting preview

April 2, 2008

Fenerbahce v Chelsea, Champions League Quarter Final, first leg - Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, 19:45pm kick-off. Live on Sky Sports 3.

Avram Grant’s Chelsea side take on Turkish Champions Fenerbahce in the first leg of their Champions League Quarter Final match hoping to set them up for a comfortable progression into the semi finals of the competition. With Manchester United looking on course for the Permiership title, it looks like the Champions League is Chelsea’s best chance of silverware this season, and they currently stand at 7/2 third favourites with Boylesports (behind Manchester United at 2/1 and Barcelona at 3/1) to win the competition.

Chelsea take the best defensive record in the Champions League into this match, having kept clean sheets in all of their last six Champions League games, and they will be hoping to extend that run further tonight. That task won’t be easy as Fenerbahce are on form at the moment, having won their last four league matches to put them two points clear at the top of the Turkish Super Lig, and having dispatched Sevilla out of the Champions League in the last round.

Arsenal v Liverpool Champions League Betting preview

April 2, 2008

Arsenal v Liverpool - Champions League Quarter Final, first leg. Emirates Stadium, Wednesday 2nd april, 19:45 kick-off. Live on Sky Sports 2.

There is guaranteed to be an English side in the semi-final of the Champions League this year as Arsenal meet Liverpool in the Quarter Finals. The first leg of the tie sees Arsenal with the home advantage as they continue their quest for the one trophy that has thus far eluded manager Arsene Wenger, whilst Liverpool will be hoping for a record sixth Champions League trophy.

Arsenal’s top scorer Emmanuel Adebayor returns to the squad as his side kick off the first of three consecutive games against Rafa Benitez’s men, with a Premiership fixture on Saturday sandwiched between the two European matches. This is the first time that the two sides have ever met in European competition. Interestingly, between them the two sides have played seven games against English opponents in Europe, andfailed to win a single one of them. Something has to give in these two games surely?

Both Arsenal and Liverpool warmed up for this series of games with wins in the Premiership last weekend, Arsenal keeping their fading Premiership title hopes alive with a comeback against relegation-threatened Bolton to win 3-2 after having Abou Diaby sent off. Diaby is available for this game, as his ban does not apply to Champions League games. Liverpool strengthened their grip on Fourth Place in the Premiership with a 1-0 win against Merseyside rivals Everton.
