Football Premiership Online Betting

The Barclays Premier League (the Premiership) is England's principal football league competition.

Origins
The ideology for the formation of the F.A. Premier League was confirmed by The Founder Members' Agreement, signed by the top clubs in July 1991. The underlying principle was to give these clubs the rights to negotiate their own sponsorship and television deals, in order to increase revenue and attract the world's best players. The Premiership was formed on 20 February 1992 and the first games were played on 15 August. Subsequently, the Premiership has become the world's most watched sporting league. It is also the most rewarding football league, with total club income of around £1.5 billion. A total of 40 clubs have competed in the Premier League since its inception, but only four have won the title, namely Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal, and Chelsea. The reigning champions are Manchester United, who won their ninth Premiership title in the 2006-07 season.

The Premiership Today
The Premier League is currently contested by 20 clubs, operating a system of promotion and relegation with The Football League. Seasons run from August to May, with teams playing each other home and away, making a total of thirty-eight games.

Qualification for European Competitions
The teams finishing in the top four places in the Premiership qualify for the U.E.F.A. Champions' League. The winners and runners-up automatically qualify for the group stages of the Champions' League. The teams finishing third and fourth in the Premiership qualify for the third qualifying round of the Champions League. In order to reach the group stages, they must win one further qualifying match, played over two legs, home and away. The team finishing fifth in the Premiership automatically qualifies for the U.E.F.A. Cup. Dependent on what happens in the F.A. Cup and League Cup, it is also possible for the teams finishing sixth and seventh in the Premiership to qualify for the U.E.F.A. Cup.

If both the F.A. Cup winners and runners-up finish in the top five of the Premier League, the U.E.F.A. Cup place goes to the sixth placed team in the League.

If the League Cup winners have already qualified for Europe, their U.E.F.A. Cup place goes to the next highest placed team in the Premiership.

The highest placed team that has not qualified for the U.E.F.A. Cup can play in the U.E.F.A. Intertoto Cup, provided they have applied to enter that competition. This provides another "back door" route to qualification for the U.E.F.A. Cup. Successful completion of three round of the Intertoto Cup ensures qualification to that competition.

Betting on the Football Premiership

Outright Betting
Online betting sites provide fluctuating prices on the Football Premiership throughout the season. Current prices are:
4/7 Manchester United, 11/4 Arsenal, 11/2 Chelsea, 66/1 Liverpool, 600/1 BAR.

"Betting Without"
Most online betting sites also provide prices "without Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal" or "without Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool." Obviously, such prices will be much shorter than those for the "Outright" market, but allow fans of some of the lesser teams to have a financial interest. To win, your team needs to finish, at worst, immediately below the top teams, i.e. fourth or fifth. The majority of online betting sites have some guidance notes to help with this sort of bet. For example, "Betting without the Big 4" prices are currently:
6/4 Everton, 3/1 Aston Villa, 4/1 Manchester City, 9/1 Blackburn 16/1 Portsmouth, 20 BAR

At the start of the season, each-way terms would be 1/5 the odds a place 1, 2, 3 for the above bets. However, since Xmas, "win only" bets have been available. Prices are also available for teams to finish in the top 2, top 4 and top 6.

Relegation
Any team can be backed to be relegated from the Premiership. Current prices are:
1/5000 Derby, 4/7 Fulham, 15/8 Wigan, Birmingham, Sunderland 4/1 Bolton, 11/2 BAR.

To Finish Bottom
Similarly, any team can be backed to finish at the bottom of the Premiership.
1/33 Derby, 9/1 Fulham, 40/1 Wigan, 50/1 Birmingham, 50/1 Sunderland, 100/1 Bolton.

Individual Matches
Online bettors provide a full list of prices for Premiership matches. It should be stressed, though, that these prices are for 90 minutes play, and as such, include a price for the draw.

Televised Matches
For matches with live T.V. coverage, online bettors provide a wide range of betting markets, including:

• Outright Prices, both at the start and "in-running"
• Correct Score
• First / Last Goalscorer
• Double Result
• Time of First Goal
