Cheltenham Gold Cup Online Betting

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the highlight of the Cheltenham Festival, which takes place in mid-March at Prestbury Park. It is a Grade 1 National Hunt steeplechase run over a 3-mile, 2 1/2 furlong course with 22 fences. The Cheltenham Gold Cup is undoubtedly the "Blue Riband" of steeplechasing.

History
The first horse races took place in Cheltenham, in the early nineteenth century, on Nottingham Hill. Such races so infuriated a local preacher that he encouraged his congregation to burn down the grandstand.
In 1845 the first ever steeplechase was run at Prestbury Park, the racecourse's current location. The first recognised Cheltenham Festival took place at Prestbury Park in 1902. This was effectively the opening of Cheltenham racecourse and the then two-day Festival proved extremely popular, attracting many thousands of spectators. The first four-mile National Hunt steeplechase (for amateur riders) was run in 1904. Some twenty years later, this race was renamed the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup was first run on 12th March, 1924. The winningmost horse in Cheltenham Gold Cup history is Golden Miller, who won consecutive Gold Cups from 1932 to 1936 inclusive. Other horses have won the race three times consecutively : Cottage Rake in 1948-1950, the legendary Arkle in 1964-1966 and Best Mate in 2002-2004.

Notable Cheltenham Gold Cups

1932
Golden Miller's fifth consecutive win.

1950
Cottage Rake's third consecutive win.

1966
Arkle's third consecutive win at odds of 1/10 (shortest ever starting price).

1983
Michael Dickinson achieved the unrivalled feat of training the first five horses home:
1. Bregawn
2. Captain John
3. Wayward Lad
4. Silver Buck
5. Ashley House.

1986
Dawn Run became the only horse to have won both the Champion Hurdle and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

1990

1991
The field for the 1991 Cheltenham Gold Cup included previous winners Desert Orchid and Norton's Coin, along with future winners The Fellow and Cool Ground. The race winner, Jenny Pitman's Garrison Savannah, was only caught on the run-in in the same year's Grand National.

1994
The Fellow became the only French-trained Gold Cup winner.

2004
Best Mate won for the third time.

Betting on the Cheltenham Gold Cup

The 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup is scheduled for Friday 14th March.

Ante-Post Betting
There is usually a thriving ante-post market for the Cheltenham Gold Cup with most online betting sites. Punters seek to avail themselves of value prices before the big day in March arrives. However, this year's ante-post "book" has a distinctly lopsided look to it, being dominated by the two Paul Nicholls' runners, Kauto Star and Denman. Denman hacked up under 11-12 in the Hennessy Gold Cup and Kauto Star won the King George 'Chase at Kempton, on Boxing Day, as he liked. Barring a major upset, all the value seems to have gone from the ante-post market.

The current Ante-post prices on offer are:
11-10 Kauto Star, 7-4 Denman, 10 Exotic Dancer, 25 Kicking King, Mossbank, Star De Mohaison, 33 Aces Four, In Compliance, Snowy Morning, The Listener, 50 Celestial Gold, Halcon Genelardais, Madison Du Berlais, Neptune Collonges, Our Vic, Racing Demon, Tamarinbleu, Turko, 66 L'Antartique, Ollie Magern, Rule Supreme, State Of Play, Turpin Green, 100 BAR.

Each-way one-quarter the odds a place 1, 2, 3.

Other Bets Available
Unless you fancy one of the first two in the market particularly strongly, the "outright" market is best left alone at this stage. Given the short prices of the market leaders, it is likely that online betting sites will introduce some speciality bets to generate betting interest in the Gold Cup. These might include:

Match Bets
One horse versus another, regardless of the race result. Some online betting sites have already priced up the match between Kauto Star and Denman as it is likely to generate most interest.

Kauto Star and Denman to finish 1st and 2nd
Already priced at 6/4 on some online betting sites.

Betting without Kauto Star and Denman
Your selection to win or be third behind the above two. Obviously, prices will be much shorter than in the outright market.
